Her arms were folded across her chest as she processed the information she'd just received, her bottom lip trembling.
Avery rolled his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I mean I don't feel that way about you anymore, Dani," he groaned. "You're just...this isn't what I want anymore, and I don't think it's fair to me — to us — to pretend that it is. All that's going to happen is we'll cause each other pain."
"Oh." Dani forced the tears from her eyes as she nodded slowly because of course. Of course after the last two years, she had outlived her usefulness to him. "I think it's time for me to leave, then." There wasn't a single part of her that could meet his eyes, but she could feel the surprise on her face ebbing away in exchange for heartbreak.
"Don't look at me like that, okay? I just don't see you the way I used to, and I don't see why I should let you go on thinking that I do."
Definitely time for me to go.
Without even thinking about grabbing her jacket from where she'd laid it at the foot of his bed, Dani quickly exited his room, down the stairs, and was out of the house before the tears could start falling.
It was fairly chilly out, for a January afternoon. But Dani didn't feel it. She didn't feel the rain pour down on her 5 minutes into her walk, or the way her clothes stuck to her skin. But she could feel the ache in her left wrist, bruised just below her bracelet from where Avery had gotten too possessive while she was talking with Jackson and held onto her a little too tightly just the previous day.
As she walked to the local park — a place she didn't know the way home from — Dani couldn't help but notice a boy her age sitting on the swings. He was tall, lanky, and was wearing a pair of black jeans and a grey pull over sweater with the hood up. But she would recognize him anywhere. Not even his hood could cover up his mop of dark curly hair.
Isaac Lahey.
Dani slowly walked up to him, staring blankly ahead of herself. His back was to her, so hadn't seen her. "Hi, Isaac," she murmured softly, folding her arms over her chest.
He jumped slightly before turning around to face her, then his eyes widened and his cheeks flushed. "Oh, um, hey." It only took her a moment to process the purple and blue surrounding his eye; someone had hit him.
"Are you okay out here? It's pretty cold," Dani asked, feeling her teeth begin to chatter as the cold air finally began to seep through the front of her undershirt.
"Yeah," Isaac nodded slowly. She shivered lightly, which he seemed to have noticed. Isaac jumped up from the swing and pulled his hoodie over his head, handing it to her shyly. "You've got goosebumps on your arms," he mumbled awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck. "And you're not really wearing much."
"Thank you," Dani whispered, the corners of her lips twitching into a smile.
She pulled the sweater over her head, the hood covering her hair. It was still quite warm from him wearing it — thankfully — and reached her mid thigh. The sleeves were much to long, though, so she pulled them up slightly to end at her knuckles.
"Do you know how to get home from here?" Isaac seemed to grow even shyer while asking the question.
"Not really," Dani murmured sheepishly. "That's kind of why I'm here. If you could just point me in the direction—"
