She'd caught Hayes sneaking out that night.
Dani hadn't stopped him or tattled because she'd done it enough times in her life for that to be nothing short of hypocritical. But she'd been worried all the same. He'd looked strange while jogging down the driveway to that familiar blue Jeep, almost like he had grown a full set of facial hair in just hour but that couldn't possibly happen.
Could it?
But he'd seemed perfectly normal that morning, aside from a trio of scratches on his arm that he dismissed easily, so she tried not to put too much thought into it. Stiles had given them a ride again that morning, and she hoped he couldn't see that something was off with her again.
The nightmare she'd had that night had been terrible, though she didn't quite know what it meant. It wasn't like the ones she usually had; this one was just flashes of numbers paired with names, many of which she didn't recognize, along with glimpses of a jaguar and a bear.
After waking up in a cold sweat, she'd grabbed her notebook and jotted down everything in her head on a piece of paper she'd torn out of the binding.
WALCOTT250. MARTIN20. MCCALL25. ARGENT12. TALBOT1
PARRISH5. DUNBAR3. HALE4
Dani had absolutely no clue what any of it meant, but she figured if she had it written down then maybe she could use her free time later on in the year to figure it out. Then when she'd calmed down, she came to a decision. She was going to write down all of her dreams so she wouldn't forget any if she decided to find out what was causing them. She wound up with journal filled with short hand note entries that she knew would only make sense to her, and then stuffed it into her bag so she could get ready for school.
She was almost sad when she realized she still had Isaac's sweater in her bag, since she hadn't had the chance to give it back to him before he was arrested. But the thought of it being with her as she moved through the halls on her own, habitually passing Avery's locker and having to face his sneering looks and the blonds at his arm, was almost enough to make her feel...brave.
Or something.
In her mind, the sheer idea that he'd killed his father didn't make any sense because the Isaac she knew and had grown used to seeing wasn't capable of something like that. He was the boy that walked her home from the park the day she got dumped, who gave her his sweater while it rained; the boy who left a note in her English book saying I think you look beautiful today.
That Isaac wasn't capable of murder.
But a thought struck her as she shoved her way into the hall containing her locker; maybe the new confident Isaac was.
The first class she had was PE with Coach Finstock, which she found unbearable all together because she hated the mere concept of having to do anything he could come up with, no matter how funny she found him. She'd met up with Lydia and Allison in the changerooms, and the two of them had chatted briefly before having to go out to the gym. Apparently they were doing rock climbing that day, and she was less than thrilled about it.
Just another easy way for boys to look at her ass.
She watched with arms folded over her chest as he chose partners and, whether it was good or bad she didn't know, she was up first. Her partner was someone she hadn't met before, a guy, and she made sure to go slow enough that he always stayed ahead of her so she was certain he wasn't trying to get a good look or feel at anything.
