It's been two years. Two years since Jason first texted Milou. Some silly wrong number text. To believe it had gone this far was insane to think about but here they were. Cursing at each other on a Gotham rooftop as they laughed about the night. She'd finally met Roy, Kori, Artemis, Bizarro, and the rest of his 'family'. Of course there was some drama. To think that she'd become the middleman between Batman and the outlaws somehow. She wasn't quite a hero, or an anti hero, she was just her.
The fight ring Lucas ran was gone now, things had gotten to complicated. There'd been gun fights, bomb threats, gangsters and assholes galore. So here They were. Paid by the city to follow cases they wanted to bury, but Commissioner Gordon knew their names. He knew they could get the job done. Especially since they knew the big bad bat and other capes. It seemed like every other day the world was ending. But to us it was just another day.
"I can't believe Lucas calls you my girlfriend- you're more like a prison warden," Jason scoffs and Milou punches his arm.
"I can't believe he calls you my boyfriend, you're more like an overgrown teenager," She replies and he punches back.
"If we don't hold those titles what are we?" he asks and she hums.
"Partners?" she asks and he smiles.
"I like that, I'm pretty sure if you were my girlfriend you would be nicer," he says matter of factly and she laughs at him.
"I'm nice to you!" she points out.
"I mean that lovey dovey shit," he replies and she shakes her head.
"Neither of us are the lovey dovey type, I'm not going to hold your hand and kiss your ass because I love you and think your the best thing in the world. Honestly, actual love is kicking the other person in the ass to be the best they can be. Telling them when they're wrong and when they're right. Holding them up when they're to hurt to stand and letting them do what they need to do to be whole," She says simply and he smirks and looks at her.
"Did you just say you love me?" he asks and she gives him a look.
"I'm not sayin it again," she replies and he smiles a little to himself.
"Maybe you are my girlfriend-"
"Say that again and I'm jumping off this roof," she jokes and he shakes his head laughing.
"Okay, okay, partner," he says smirking, "that's a good word for this."
"You think so?" she smiles.
"Yeah. Girlfriend/boyfriend, dating, that implies shit is easy, happy all the time, to lovey dovey for us. Partners? Now that's something I can get behind," he says and Milou nods.
They look out over the city quietly. The sound of a police scanner is quiet in their ears. The cool wind wisps past them easily. There are lights and sirens, car honks, and shouts. It's Gotham, no one can be everywhere at once. And despite the crime, the killings, the villains, and life here in general, things went on. The two lean on each other and let their aches resonate through them. It's almost comforting. It's their normal.
"I think... I think things are going to be alright," he breathes and she smiles.
"Yeah, it's going to be alright."
