(Luke’s POV)

It was Tuesday so I was going to study and the library with Ashton and Calum. I was feeling much better today, my headache was gone. I only had one class today, but that was in the afternoon.

I entered the library and found our usual table. Cal and Ash were already there.

“Hey,” I greeted them.

“Hi Luke,” Calum said.

“Yeah, hi.”

They both looked at me slightly concerned. I already knew that someone told them about Sunday night.

“Guys, I’m fine. I was dragged to that party and I’m never going to another one. Can we start? I’m really behind,” I pleaded.

They didn’t bother me about the party (thankfully) and we opened our text books. We were sketching curves, which I suck at! Usually math came really easy but calculus is freaking hard!

2x2 EXAMPLE: Use the guidelines to sketch the curve f (x) = x2 − 1

I had to find the domain. Please, can I not? It was work, math was work! I wonder if Kris is any good at math, maybe she could help me sometime.

f”(x)=(3/(x+2^2))=(3(x+2)−2)=3((x+2)−2)=−6(x+2)−3 =− 6/(x + 2)3

concave upward on (−∞, −2) and concave downward on (−2, ∞) There are no inflection points , since x = −2 is not in the domain.

I really hope Kris is good at math. This makes no sense. Studying with her might actually be fun! She’s really good at distracting me though, so how much would I really get done.

“Luke! You alive, man? What are the intercepts?” Ashton asked.

“Don’t we usually find the domain first?” I said confused.

Calum shook his head, “we already found that.”

“Oh, sorry. My mind is somewhere else today. I'm focused now,” I promised.

My mind was somewhere over the rainbow, I couldn’t think about anything other than Kristine. I needed to get her off my mind. I looked back down at my workbook. Just looking at calculus made me cringe. I liked our last unit better:  Derivatives and the Shapes of Graphs. It was a little easier. Not by much though.

After about 20 minutes of focus my phone buzzed. Cal and Ash were absorbed in their math stuff, so I quickly peaked at my phone under the table.

“There’s a football game tonight- first of the season I think. wanna come?”

When I saw it was from Kris I got really jumpy. I replied quickly.

“Yeah what time”

“I think it starts at 7 but I don’t have many details,” she replied.

“UUUGHHHH I have work until 8:30 and I’ll probs be locking up so 9”

“It’s okay- i’ll come by at 8:30 and we’ll walk there together. Sound good?”

“okay, thanks,” I responded.

I put my phone back away and looked up. Thankfully the guys were still sucked into their calculus problems. I tried moving to an easier problem, and to work by myself. I really didn’t want to do math though. I had just started The Glass Castle this morning and I’m almost done.

“I have to go, I forgot I’m meeting with a professor before my next class,” I excused myself.

“Okay, see ya in class,” they replied not looking up from their books.
