Luke’s POV

“You forgot to bold her name,” I pointed out.

“Oops!”

Kristine and I were typing up our finalized script on my laptop. We had just gotten back from the library about 2 hours ago. It was about 6:00. My phone started ringing.

“I have to take this, one minute.”

Kris nodded but was too concentrated on typing.

“Hello?”

“LUKEY POO! Hi hon, it’s your mom,” she squealed.

“Yeah, I know. I have caller ID.”

“Don’t sass me,” she commanded.

“Okay, sorry, Liz. what do you need?” I asked.

“Well, Thanksgiving is in a month. What are you planning on?”

I really hadn’t thought about Thanksgiving or visiting home in general. What was Kristine doing?

“I don’t know,” I answered honestly.

“Well the family is coming up. I’m sure they would be happy to see you.”

I hesitated.

“Luke, do you have a reason to stay? Studying I hope?”

“Well, maybe,” I said thinking of Kristine.

“Not… Not a girl, right Luke?”

“Maybe, I don’t know,” I murmured.

“There’s a girl. What’s her name? Age? GPA?” Liz bombarded me with questions.

“Uh… Um, Kristine. And she’s 19 just like me, and I don’t know Liz!? She’s smart. What do you want, her family history, too?”

The line was quiet. I know she wants her family history.

“Liz, please!”

“Is she there?” she asked.

“Yeah, why? We’re not doing anything, promise!”

“Put her on speaker,” she commanded.

“What?”

“Speaker!” she argued sternly.

I gave up and put it on speaker. Kristine looked up from the laptop.

“What’s going on?” Kristine asked.

“My mother wants to talk with you on speaker phone,” I sighed.

“Hello? Kristine? This is Liz, Luke’s mom.”

“Hi,” Kris said hesitantly.

“What are your values and morals?” Liz asked.

“MOM! What is that supposed to mean?” I exclaimed.

“Kristine, answer the question,” my mom coaxed.

Kris looked at me and mouthed, “what the fuck am I supposed to say?” I shrugged and mouthed, “what she would want you to say.”

“I’m waiting, Kristine.”

“Hi, Mrs. Hemmings. I believe honesty is very important,” Kris said sweetly.

I motioned for her to keep going.

“And uh… I think that you should attend church every sunday, swearing is a sin, and you should always work your hardest!”

It was a cheesy answer, but I guess it’ll do. The line was silent and we both stared at each other nervous.
