"— not human," Bella heard as she entered the Cullen home. She had just finished putting Renesmee to bed.
"What's going on?" she asked.
"Carlisle has a theory," Edward said. "He thinks that your cousin and her husband aren't human."
"Not human?" Bella laughed. "That's impossible, Carlisle. I've known Hermione since we were babies. She's the embodiment of the most human human in the world."
"Her blood— it wasn't completely human," Carlisle explained. "Human, but with a slight twinge of something different."
"Different what?" Bella asked.
"I don't know," Carlisle said. "I've never smelled of such a thing."
"Maybe they're hybrids, like Nessie," Jacob shrugged.
"Can you see anything in your visions, Alice?"
"No," Alice said, frustrated. "It's all a bit of a blurfr."
"I can't hear their thoughts, either. I could at first with Hermione, but once i started concentrating, there was a block."
"That's weird, isn't it?" Bella wondered.
Hermione had always seemed normal to her. A bit smart, yes, and a bit annoying, but she had grown out of that as she got older. But what was the odds that both she and her husband were some sort of a hybrid?
"I still say that they're not safe," Rosalie huffed. "Before, we thought that they were humans who could reveal our secret. And now, it turns out that they could be dangerous."
Bella just shook her head. "Hermione would never hurt anyone."
She wandered over to the couch and sat down, deep in thought. Had Hermione ever shown any signs that could have mad her different?
She racked her brain. There were so many family reunions, and her being a vampire had made some of her childhood memories fuzzy. She remembered Hermione at each one, grinning widely at her with a thick book tucked under her arm.
Hermione would blabber on about whatever she was reading, and Bella would listen carefully, although some of the subjects were quite boring.
But Hermione had never seemed abnormal. Not even a bit.
Then, she remembered. They had been eight when one of their older cousins, Matt, had made fun of Hermione, making her tear up. Hermione's book had flew through the air and smacked him in the face, giving him a nose bleed.
She had always dismissed it and thought that Hermione had thrown it, but Matt was at least ten feet away, and Hermione was never a good athlete.
"I— I do remember something," Bella murmured. "At a family reunion. I had always thought it was nothing, though."
"What was it?" Esme asked kindly.
Bella shrugged. "It's not important. Maybe it's nothing, but I'll ask Hermione about it when I get the chance. We'll try to figure out what's going on, but I'm still pretty sure that she's just a regular human."
"If she is a human," Carlisle said. "Then we'll have nothing to worry about. We just want to be sure. Bella, do you think it would be possible to invite her over for dinner some time?"
"Y-yeah, sure," Bella replied. "I'm sure it's going to be nothing. Just a mistake."
