I sat in silence, watching TV static. I stared at the phone in my lap. I dialled the number again and waited.

one ring...

two rings...

three rings-

I poured myself another glass of whiskey and swirled the drink around. My hands were shaking, my head felt heavy. If he ever hurt her! I'd fucking kill him! I know he will. I'm worried about her.

"Hey, uh, Chloe. Is Courtney there? Uh, really? Oh, right, okay" Sleeping? I heard her voice in the background asking about lip gloss. She wouldn't. I thought we were a thing. I needed to know.

"Hey, Bart, do you know what's going on with Edward tonight? A date? With who? Oh... really? Ok, thanks, bye" I collapsed against the door, my head in my hands.

My head was pounding as I sipped my drink. My phone then buzzed and I ran to it.

"Courtney?!"

"Guess again, Romeo"

"Oh, hi Brent. Sorry, I was expecting a call from someone"

"No shit. Anyway, I have big news"

"Oh yeah?" I sighed, half interested.

"Vidcon!" he cheered.

"Oh cool, when?"

"This weekend! We've booked rooms already. It'll be you and Courtney, Carter and Chloe, Jess and Hayes, Ashleigh and Cameron, Sydney and Matt. The rest of us boys will share" he said, mentally ticking off names.

"When are we leaving?"

"Tomorrow, so pack everything tonight, Carter and Cameron are going to drive. Then its a plane to Chicago.

"Oh, and Tay?"

"Yeah?"

"We leave early so if you're not up, I'll send Chloe up!" he warned.

Two weeks in Chicago. I packed light; a few tops, jeans and shorts along with around fourteen jackets and seven pairs of trainers. My case barely shut, it made me think of that night Court and I were packing for Turkey. There was so much in there that she sat on it so I could close it. We had fun when we went there.

It was all so hard to think about. I shoved on a pair of trainers to go for a walk. I didn't know where I was going, I just... walked. The sky was inky black and littered with stars. I ran down to the beach and sat by the waters edge. My shoes tucked beside me. My feet just touching the small waves, so they could lap against my feet without dampening my clothes. Out here I felt safe, the lights of the houses couldn't catch me and I was invisible from inside. I couldn't see but I didn't need to. I closed my eyes and listened. The sea a smooth and rhythmic hush, grasshoppers chirping behind me, the wind whispering sweet sorrows. It was beautiful, but it was missing something, someone...

Her voice was the smell before the rain. Her smile brighter than all the stars in the sky. No one could blow a candle to her beauty. Her small, slim body. A waterfall of blonde hair.

Perfection...

It is true what they say, the world isn't a wish granting factory. But who needs wishes when you have her?

Without instruction, I stood up and walked away. Towards her house. Just ten minutes away, a journey I had taken many times before. Only this time, it felt much, much longer.

I stopped three houses before hers, she was there. Hair in perfect ringlets, purple dress highlighting her figure. Followed by him.

She danced up the steps and he followed. Before she reached the door he kissed her, hard and desperate almost. As the kissing intensified, he grabbed her hand and placed it on his crotch. It was all I had in me to stop myself from marching up there and beating the shit out of him. She shoved him away and he said something, she laughed. They hugged, kissed again, and then he walked away.

My heart shattered as I did the same.
