Chapter 25

Brendon and I stayed for a week at the house and it was the most painful week of my life. It was a huge process of getting things situated, helping Mom pack up some of Dad’s things because she wanted to but couldn’t do it all on her own, setting up funeral arrangements, letting family know, and finally Tessa told me she had it all under control and Brendon and I got to go back home. My family needed me and I got why but it was difficult from going to having no contact to suddenly having to have input because my dad died and full nonstop contact.

It was nice to finally be home and get to take it all in. I could finally have a moment to breathe and calm down and understand everything I’d just experienced. I could have a moment with just Brendon and the dogs and if I had an issue he listened intently.  It was really rough the first couple nights, lots of nightmares and not much sleep. Which meant not much sleep for Brendon either but he was a champ. I slept a lot during the day, missed a lot of pills, had a whole lot of mood swings and spikes of depression and anxiety, but Brendon stuck around.

In the middle of one of my naps I was woken up by my phone going off, which gave me more than a little bit of a panic anymore.

“Hello?” I didn’t even bother looking at the caller ID.

“Faith, you never called,” it was Jenna and she sounded incredibly upset.

“Oh god, I’m so sorry, I’ve been really focused on other things…”

“Yeah, we just got the invitation to your father’s funeral. I’m so sorry, are you doing OK? Is there anything at all I can do? What all happened?”

“Um, well, he was disoriented, Mom got him to the hospital, he deteriorated and they put him on life support, his organs started failing, and I was in the room when they took him off and he died. It was essentially the worst two days of my life.” I said into the phone, entirely too monotone.

“Oh my god should I come out to California? Do you need anything?”

“It’s ok, be happy, plan your wedding, I’ll see you at the funeral I imagine. Thanks for the call.”

“I’ll see you,” she said and hung up the phone. I heard quiet footsteps and sat up, Brendon cracked he door and seeing me up came in.

“What’s up, nightmare?” he asked and sat next to me, wrapping me in his arms and pulling me into him.

“No, Jenna called, she just got the invitation and she wanted to know why I hadn’t called, basically.”

“You doing alright?” he asked after a moment.
