Eight: Embarrassing a snake and devastating news

One of the footmen rushed forward, opening the carriage door for us. First to leave was Papa, who, gracefully as always, stepped down and put on the airs of a king and he was soon followed by Lucien who seemed to have also gained some intimidating royal aura during the time I was away.

Finally, Papa nodded at me and then extended a gloved hand for me to take. Gently placing my own in his larger palm, I carefully walked down the small steps of the carriage, luckily not tripping and falling flat on my face. My eyes were narrowed slightly to block the harsh sun slightly but that didn't mean I couldn't see the vicious malice filling my step-mother's eyes as she looked at me with that disgusting smile of hers.

"Caroline," I said cooly, not giving her any recognition as the queen or my step-mother. Low murmurs and disapproving looks from the council just confirmed what I already knew — that they were all greedy pigs interested in self-gain. "I would say it's a pleasure to see you again but it really isn't."

The snake's smile dropped and she was now openly showing her distaste for me. To hide my smirk, I grabbed the fan that Scorpio had offered me (she and Aries had exited from the other side of the carriage and walked around) and opened it, hiding the lower half of my face from her view as I fanned myself lightly.

"Now Caroline, should you not show respect towards the king and heirs? It is only right that you — a second queen and mother who has produced no children of royal lineage — pay your respects towards the rest of the family, is it not?" I heard gasps and more disapproving murmurs; the council were obviously not happy with my complete disrespect and disregard for their chosen queen. There was also the fact that I called her out for possibly having children with another man.

But since my words held truth to them, both the council and the snake had to grit their teeth and bear with it. She smiled her bloodthirsty smile, elegantly walking (or trying, she just seemed tense and annoyed really) forward and dipping into a curtsey in front of Papa, Lucian and I. My mouth was still covered by the fan and it was blocking her view but I knew she knew that I was sadistically enjoying her pain.

Because my father did not give her permission to rise, she could only stay in her curtsey and he completely ignored her, turning around and smiling pleasantly at Big Brother, Etti, Eshai and his brother and the Headmaster. After exchanging a few words — Caroline was still stuck in her curtsey position — Papa waved and invited them to enter the castle, passing the council without acknowledgement and gliding down the red carpet like a boss.

Smirking behind the fan, I placed my spare hand in Lucian's elbow and we walked forward. I hesitated slightly as I passed her before discreetly kicking out my foot and shoving it into her, causing her to fall to the ground with a loud thump.

I could hear her loud sigh and could practically smell the embarrassment rolling off of her in waves as I continued forward, following Papa into the castle with the others trailing (a few snickering, Scorpio openly laughing) behind me. She had just completely embarrassed herself in front of important foreign envoys, ruining the little to no image she already had.

The council, though disapproving, could not say anything about it and could only wait until we were all passed before following behind us and talking in unhappy and low tones while Caroline was helped up by some of her maids, completely enraged.

"Didn't know you were so sadistic sis," Lucian snickered, leaning down so his mouth was by my ear. "I'm quite proud of you. But be careful, there may be some serious repercussions for your actions against her." He warned lowly, glancing around to make sure no one heard.

I turned to look at him, blinking innocently.

"What actions are you talking about dear brother?"

Lucian smiled, amused by my antics. "Why, being such a darling of course; no one could be as elegant and pretty as my sister~" He complimented and thus, our little compliment war began.

A few hours later and a few hours after Big Brother, Etti, Eshai and the others had been settled into their own rooms, he and Lucian told me to come to mother's favourite drawing room and though wary of their intentions for such a thing, I obeyed.

Walking in, I couldn't help but notice the large portrait of mother hanging up on the wall, a small yet comforting smile gracing her beautiful face. Her pale silver hair and angelic appearance alongside the golden crown adorning her head suited the room in all its white, light blue and gold splendour. I was so awestruck with the portrait of mother that I didn't notice Lucian and Papa sitting by the large window drinking tea and waiting for me.

"Amar!" Lucian called out, gaining my attention. Seeing my eyes on them, he gestured me over and I went over, taking a seat.

When the maid on standby saw I had sat down, she went to pour the tea but Papa just sent her away, deciding to fuss over me himself.

Quickly, my suspicions became even larger. Sending out the maid and ordering her to shut the door? And Lucian looking nervous as hell? This could only be an important matter...

"Get out with it, I'll know eventually." I saw Papa gulp and my eyes narrowed, already displeased with what I was about to hear.

"Amaryllis..." Lucian started and my attention became focused on him. "I-I" He stuttered, trying to find the right words to use. It took him a while before he did and my heart dropped and blood boiled when I heard them

"I've been engaged to someone!"
