Merlin P.O.V:
When our first course came through (Arthur was long-since accustomed to giving the leftovers that were sufficient for human consumption to the poorest areas of Camelot) I declined from mentioning my question. It was too early on in the meal. Besides, Arthur was moaning to me about his duties - the few he had to spend without me by his side. His favourite to moan about was training the new Knights. That was why I would sometimes sit and watch as he trained them (I'd laugh when he was out of earshot).
Between the first and second courses (and continuing into the second course itself, as Arthur liked to ask questions) was my turn to talk about my day. Arthur often asked me to remind him what we'd done together, as he did so much that he often forgot.
So I worked out that between the second and third courses was the best time for me to ask. I almost forgot to ask, as Arthur asked me more questions than usual. But, I did ask. I didn't forget. I finally got an answer.
The only downside to when I asked, is that we ended up having an audience. Gwaine was holding the door for George and a maid, who were bringing in the final course. When Arthur had finished asking questions about my day, and I had answered all of his questions, I stood from my seat beside him. Arthur turned, about to get up, about to ask what I was doing. I noticed the door to Arthur's chambers open, but it was too late to put it off now. I knelt down onto one knee, as I had when I had been knighted, and pulled my request to the blacksmith from a small pocket in my jacket.
"King Arthur Pendragon, son of Ygraine and Uther, Ruler of Camelot, Leader of Albion," the maid who was bringing in food gasped, understanding what was happening, "will you do me the honour of marrying me, and making me the luckiest person in Camelot?" I held out the gift, a ring, towards Arthur.
He smiled, and my heart started to slow its beating. He held his hand out to me, so that I could put the ring onto his finger. "Merlin," he sighed. "Merlin, Merlin, Merlin. I could marry you a million times a day." He stood, pulling me to my feet, wrapped his arms around my waist, and kissed me. I closed my eyes and settled into the embrace, euphoric that he had said yes.Other P.O.V:
When Gwaine let the manservant and maid into Arthur's chambers with the final course, he didn't expect to see Merlin stood beside Arthur's chair. He urged the maid and manservant to be as silent as possible, to avoid disturbing the pair.
Gwaine watched with silent awe and glee as Merlin got onto one knee in front of Arthur's chair. He knew what was about to happen, and was glad, because he had placed a bet around 8 months previously that there would be a royal wedding within a year of him placing the bet.
He saw the maid tense as she realised what was happening, but was unable to get to her in time to prevent her reaction as Merlin spoke. As Merlin paused after formally addressing Arthur, the maid let out an involuntary gasp. Merlin noticed, but didn't seem to care, particularly, instead just continuing with his question.
As Merlin asked his question and Arthur replied, the manservant and the maid quickly finished laying out the final course and left the chambers. As the two kissed, Gwaine silently shut the door to Arthur's chambers, grinning. He was about to earn his wage, alongside the wages of most of the rest of the tavern's regulars.
When the manservant and maid had left, Gwaine noticed the manservant hit the back of the maid's head, for accidentally making a noise. He decided, as he stood in a silent vigil, guarding Arthur's chambers, that as soon as he was permitted to leave, he would find the maid and ensure that she was alright.
It was soon after the manservant and maid had retrieved the dirty crockery from the final course that Gwaine was relieved of duty by Arthur. "Merlin is about to return to his quarters, in any case," Arthur told him.
