The song ended softly, and the 1979 Ford Ranchero rolled to a stop, and you looked up to realise where you were.
The metal gates were open, and the darkening sky shadowed the brick post: you gulped, and a cold shiver crawled down your spine. Part of you understood why you had driven here but stubbornness was your middle name and if you walked through those doors it would be like stepping back into the past and your not sure if you're ready.
You sat there in the heated car for what felt like hours staring out of the windscreen that had a veil of raindrops.
___
"Screw it" you cursed out loud before putting the gear into drive and rolling down the path your whole body alert. The school looked different from the last time you saw it which to be fair was over 7 years ago, the yard flourished and trees neatly trimmed. The mansion was dark besides from yellow blots of light splattered against the ink sky.
The engine faded out as you closed the door you had left everything back at your old flat - not that you had much- your hand paused for a few seconds before knocking on the large oak doors. It was quiet; you thought no one heard and with a heavy sigh, you were walking away. You got a few strides from the door when you heard your name called, and you stopped, tensing before turning; Hank stared at you in disbelief a lopsided smile plastered on his face he fixed his glasses before looking at you again, "wh-what are you doing here?" He muttered still shocked by your visit.
"I don't know. I was driving, and I just ended up here" you pulled your cardigan closer.
___
Hank showed you to your room -everyone else was in bed - the only reason Hank was up due to him finishing research in the lab. A small smile tugged on the corners of your mouth seeing as your room exactly how you left it not even a speck of dust in sight.
The morning came and passed: you opened your door to find children walking past - Charles got his school after all this time. Hank had told you to talk to Charles, yet you were still anxious- what would you even say.
___
You made your way to Charles study you opened the door only to find a group of students looking back at you, "heck" you mumbled under your breath turning to leave
," y/n " a voice spoke, You felt as if a spotlight was on you and you dreaded facing him.
Charles looked at your dumbfounded, and the kids kept glancing from you back to the professor with mouths hanging open.
" That'll be all for today class. " Charles dismissed the students: you moved to the side allowing hem out, the last to leave was a redhead she smiled at you knowingly as she knew something you didn't.
"Y/n it's been a long time."
You stood there frozen, Charles smiled as he wheeled over hesitantly he reached out scared that you would disappear.
" Why are you back - not that I don't want you back, in fact, you have been all I thought about —" Charles licked his lips after his short ramble
" Don't you know. I mean you are a telepath" you whispered Charles laughed at that.
"I made a promise to you remember."
___
The next few months you were settling back into your life back at the school. You were a teacher now: teaching History and math. It had been weird between you and Charles both of you want the same thing; you were not wanting to be the first to admit it and Charles not wanting to lose you again.
It was almost a year later when you decided enough was enough - life had finally gotten back on track and you had a home again, friends, a job you loved surrounded by fellow mutants. You and Charles took a moonlit walk after the students were asleep, you stopped outside the lake before finally admitting your feeling that you ever so wished would disappear, but you couldn't help the way you felt- you loved him: the Charles in front of you was a more mature resemblance of your Charles back at Cuba.
You remember Charles reaching out to you, saying he'll never hurt you again, before his lips connected to yours. When you pulled away from the kiss, Charles stared lovingly into your glowing eyes he ran his thumb across your lips before making a promise.
If this was the result of your stubbornness, then you were okay with that.
___
You spent the next years being so happy and complete not just because of Charles but of course, and he was a major part of it. You and Charles continued to grow together, your relationship stronger than ever - having the past mistakes was a reminder of the time you two lost.

A/N
Sorry for pretty rushed chapter but I'm so ready to begin with the apocalypse timeline. School back next week 😬 so I'm trying to update more this week because updates will slow down during exam time again😭😭 This was confusing for me to write so I have no idea how confusing it must be to you, sorry 💕. Next chapter should be either a lil bit before the events of apocalypse or straight on in 🤷‍♀️
**thanks for reading💛**
