Prologue: Victory

LESS THAN ONE YEAR AGO...

"The thing is...I think I love you," Lui whispered. He sounded gentle, shy, and sweet as he grasped Ferox's hands in his own. "I want to be your boyfriend."

Ferox had dreaded this conversation as she did not know how to reject Lui. She had been best friends with the teal-haired boy since childhood, but she had never imagined a romance sparking between them. Ferox wanted to lie that she loved him and believed everything would be simpler if she loved him. However, she did not care about Lui romantically and could not bury herself in falsehoods.

"Blueberry, I care about you, but I...I-I-I...I'm sorry. I just can't," Ferox said, slowly pulling her hands away. She took a deep breath and took a step backward. "I don't love you that way."

"But I love you!" Lui snapped, crossing his arms. His face contorted, and his purple eyes flared. His blue hair flaming, Lui said, "I don't understand why you won't return my feelings! I've been with you forever! How can you not love me back?!"

"I'm sorry," Ferox said, her pupils dilating. She ducked her head and said more quietly and guiltily, "But I don't see you as anything more than my best friend."

Lui's eyes smoldered, and the teal-haired boy clenched his fist. "Best friends?" Lui sneered. "Ever since you started that Beigoma Academy Beyclub with Valt, you haven't been hanging out with me as much. We barely talk anymore."

Ferox shrunk away, and she said, her voice fluctuating, "The Beigoma Academy Beyclub members are my friends. I understand that you're angry, but it isn't fair to tell me to stop spending time with them. It's like me telling you to stop training because I said so."

"See, you've chosen them over me," Lui said snidely.

"I have not," Ferox said, trying to calm him down. "I'm here with you right now."

"You've downgraded yourself to the Beigoma Academy Beyclub when you could be with me! I don't understand why! They're losers, and Valt is the biggest loser of them all!" Lui said, laughing harshly before smirking. He did not truly mean it, but he hoped to hit a sore spot and hurt Ferox as much as she wounded his heart; she deserved it for turning him down.

Ferox's fists balled, and the girl no longer had the patience to stay subdued. She always put her family first, and Lui had crossed a line. Her face turning pink, Ferox said, "Don't bring Valt into this. Valt is an amazing blader, and one day, you'll see what I see in him!"

"Oh, I should have figured! You care about your adopted younger brother more than me, even though I've known you longer!" Lui said, his face reddening.

"Please stop bringing up the Beigoma Academy Beyclub and Valt. That's not what we're talking about. This is about you and me!" Ferox said, her words faltering and her throat hoarse. "Were the past ten years all for nothing? Why are you acting like a sordid arse?!"

Lui's face burned, and the boy yelled, "You're the ungrateful bitch! Why do you think that I've stuck with you for this long?! Just to be your platonic buddy? I've liked you since forever. I've done everything to win you over, yet the moment you joined the Beyclub, you forgot about me and pranced around with other boys!"

"I-I'm sorry, okay?" Ferox said, her eyebrows furrowing, and she recoiled as Lui took another threatening step toward her. She was so aghast by Lui's sudden malice and fearful for her physical safety that she stammered, "Oh Lord, you're not the guy that I thought you were."

"What do you mean 'you're not the guy that I thought you were'?" Lui repeated mockingly. "What more do you want from me?! I've given you everything!"
