Wakiya stared back; he was stunned and speechless.
Rantaro shook hands with Ataru, while Valt did so with Silas. Ferox shook hands with Setsuna, and they stared at each other for a long time before parting. The other girl definitely knew the truth about Ferox's past, and Ferox was unsure how to feel about that.
Ferox moved beside Free. She was unaware of what happened between Free and Wakiya, but she did notice the golden-haired boy stand taller, making himself look more intimidating.
"And with that, both sides pledge to be good sports and play by the books!" the commenter said. "So let's jump right in! Here are the rules: the competitors of each match will be chosen by their respective captains. They'll have to pick carefully because their choices have a huge impact on how things go down. Gotta snag two points to win a match, and the first team to win four matches claims sweet victory. Now, this game is bound to get fiery hot!"
"Wait!" Wakiya suddenly piped up. He looked at Free and Ferox and then at the commenter. "I request a few minutes to speak with the opposition!"
"Request granted!" the referee said.
The crowd groaned.
"What do you want?" Ferox said, perplexed why he was stalling the match.
"You finally got a boyfriend, didn't you, Ferox Aoi? Are you and Free going out?" Wakiya asked, wiggling his eyebrows. Silas, Ataru, and Setsuna all blinked and stared, while Valt and Rantaro's jaws dropped open. The two boys shrieked as Wakiya said, "It's so obvious."
Ferox grinned, amazed that he had caught on. It must have been the long glances and how close she stood to Free; Wakiya was certainly more perceptive than the other boys.
On the other hand, Free stared blankly at Wakiya.
Rantaro said in a high-pitched voice, "No way! Ferox can't be with Free! They've known each other for only a week."
Wakiya raised an eyebrow. He smugly said to prove his point, "My parents fell in love the moment they saw each other, and they got married a week later. I, the light and joy of their lives, was born the same year." He sounded unusually proud about his parent's crazy love story, and he emphasized every word to instigate Rantaro, whose face turned 50 different shades of red.
"That's just your parents! That doesn't mean that Free and Ferox are the same!" Rantaro said, his head spinning at the idea of Ferox cradling a child with Free.
"Does, too!"
"Does not!"
The two of them continued to argue, while Ferox stood there sheepishly beside a stoic, unimpressed Free. Finally, Silas said, "As much as I enjoy this childish banter, why don't we let Free and Ferox answer for themselves, so we can move on to blading? The crowd must be wondering why we are taking so long to get ready for the match."
"CHILDISH BANTER?!" Rantaro and Wakiya said in unison, and they glared at Silas, who readjusted his glasses with bored intent.
Setsuna giggled, while Valt observed cluelessly.
"What?" Valt said, dumbstruck. "What do you mean by 'together'? Does that mean that they're talking or something? What's so special about that!?"
Rantaro groaned, and Wakiya said deviously, "What I mean by 'together' is that your older sister and Free..." Wakiya made a crude gesture with his hands.
Ferox blushed, while Free's eyes widened.
Valt stared, unable to understand what Wakiya was doing, while Rantaro yelped in horror. Rantaro comically covered Valt's eyes, and Valt moved his hand out of the way.
