SEVEN YEARS AGO...
A few months passed, and Lui and Ferox had still not talked about the kiss. It seemed like a closed case, but Ferox felt frustrated to no end. She could do nothing about Lui's crush on her, even as her anxiety grew and whispered that she was wasting precious time.
Ferox reminded herself to be patient.
Zmaj had chosen her to be a Legendary Blader at five years old, and she had accompanied older Legendary Bladers on important missions. Ferox carried a heavy responsibility, and there was no room for mistakes, especially when her Beyblade was the most destructive one in existence. She had grown up fast because the circumstances called for it.
But dreary days such as today left Ferox wondering if not only King's death, but the Star Fragment of Nemesis robbed her childhood. Zmaj could not possess her, but Ferox's power to hear sacred tongues did not mean that wielding a dark Beyblade came without consequences.
Although Ferox could not be possessed by her Bey, Zmaj's presence was sometimes asphyxiating. The brown-haired girl could speak with her Bey spirit at all times, meaning that she was continually in sync with absolute darkness. The shadows were voracious, scornful, and ruthless, and Ferox could pick up on the malevolent energy stirring inside her.
"Zmaj, am I worthy of being your blader?" Ferox asked, her gaze downcast as she touched her Beyblade's lengthy blades. "Some days, I feel like I'm a blader because I have to be."
I am happy that you're my blader, Zmaj explained, and the shadowy wolf-dragon spirit appeared beside Ferox. You're not the most skilled, talented, or confident blader in the world, but you are undoubtedly the most resilient.
"Resilient?" Ferox whispered. She had never considered herself resilient; she simply kept moving forward no matter what and made the best of her playing cards.
Having much to lose means having much to fight for, Zmaj said, so you endure.
"I finished," Lui said, exiting the restroom.
Ferox put away Tala Zmaj, and she smiled and said, "Are you going to stay tonight at the B-Pit? Uncle Kenta came to visit, and he is staying the night."
"Not tonight," Lui said, a genuine grin on his face. "Leo will be home early tonight."
"That's great," Ferox said, her mind engrossed with thoughts. "I'll call you later, Blueberry."
"Yeah," Lui said. A day later, Lui would look back at this night, not knowing if was fortunate or cursed that this was one of the rare days he did not stay overnight in the B-Pit.
"Are you looking forward to joining blading tournaments in three years, Rox-Rox?" Kenta asked after swallowing a mouthful of thick udon noodles. He did not even consider the idea that Ferox would not take after her prodigious blading father.
"I am," Ferox answered, despite being unsure.
Until King's passing, Ferox had enjoyed her daring adventures with the Legendary Bladers; the responsibility had been immense, but purpose gave her needed direction. Learning from the older generation strengthened her family ties, and Beyblade kept her connected to her best friend Lui. Nothing matched the pride, joy, and comradery that Beyblade brought her.
Yet Beyblade was not as fun as it used to be.
As time passed, Ferox realized that Beyblade was the only constant in her ever-changing life. People could hurt and leave you, but Zmaj remained perpetually by her side. She needed something that nobody could take from her, and that was Beyblade.
