Magnus was not having a really good day. He had woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of his boyfriend's snoring. Alec was usually a taciturn individual, so this was unusual. He thought he might as well go to the bathroom. There was no sense in waking up in a couple of hours anyway to do what he could do now. He carefully maneuvered himself out of the bed so he didn't wake up Alec. After cautious placement, he set off to the bathroom. While passing the frame of the bedroom door he heard a very loud --MEOW-- and then a thud. He had tripped over his asinine cat, Chairman Meow, and fell face first onto the carpet. At first he felt pain, then he felt sadness. Chairman Meow had seemed to be virtually unaffected, but a rug burn was all on the right side of Magnus' cheek. It also didn't help that Alec had stirred awake.
"Magnus," Alec said, "what happened?" Alec sounded erratic from being suddenly woken up.
"It's nothing, Alexander. Go back to bed." Magnus curtly replied.
"I heard the cat yowl and something crash. Are you okay?" Alec sounded worried.
"I'm fine dear. ''Tis but a scratch.'" Magnus said.
Magnus usually assuaged the situations in which he got hurt. "Mags, are you hurt?" Alec questioned.
Magnus understandingly replied, "I just got a rug burn. Nothing new with this innocent cat falling asleep even in the most dangerous of places. You can go back to bed now, Alexander. I'll heal myself, and I'll be fine."
There was a sudden blue fire-like light as the warlock quickly healed himself. Alec, feeling tired, fell gently back asleep, the sounds of his soft snores filling the room. Magnus, no longer having the rug burn on his cheek, got up with a defeated grunt and made his way to the bathroom. A couple minutes later, he swiftly made his way back to bed and fell back asleep.
The beeping of the alarm clock came way too fast for Magnus to register. Alec was no longer beside him. Of course, he was now at work, protecting the world from demons. His prowess made Magnus feel mixed emotions of proud and fearful. The job he did was very dangerous. He could die at any moment. However, he knew that was the shadowhunters' way of life. "We are dust and shadows." Magnus knew he would have to face Alec's death one day because Magnus would live forever. He just preferred to see his boyfriend grow old and live a long and prosperous life. The thought of Alec dead as a young man-or even in 50 years was too much for Magnus to bare. Not wanting to think of it anymore, he pushed the thought to the back of his mind.
Magnus made his way to the kitchen only to discover he was out of coffee. NO COFFEE! How was a 400 year old supposed to function with no caffeine? It became apparent that Alec had taken the last cup to go. Nothing about today was going to go right Magnus thought as he slid on boots and a long black coat.
Making his way to Starbucks around the corner of Magnus' apartment, Magnus passed a ramshackle brick house with a crumbling, ruddy facade. The building had always given him the creeps. The people who lived there weren't that nice either. They were always in everyone else's business. Janice Young and her cheating husband, Ronnie, were never nice to Magnus. He suspected it was because he was dating another guy. The Young's were never known for their forward thinking. At least he had a love that would last the next five years. He didn't think that Janice was stupid enough to not realize Ronnie was going to leave her for her hairdresser.
