Chapter 9

We head downstairs. My hand tightly in his. It isn't that I'm nervous about going into a roomful of people I don't know. I'm nervous because I'm going into a roomful of people, who most likely blame me for the death of one of their own.

"You'll be fine. I won't let go, I promise," Zack whispers. I nod before allowing him to pull me into the living room.

Jason and Zack's parents, along with a whole other bunch of bad ass looking werewolves, turn when we enter the room. The conversation dies.

"What took so long?" Nathan asks. A second later his eyes catch a look at my shoulder and his eyes widen a little. He waves the question away.

"There were a few things we needed to sort out beforehand," Zack says as he walks further into the room; my hand still linked with his.

We ended up by an old mahogany writing desk, which is at the back of the room, near the window. I don't want to stand in the middle of the room feeling like a lemon, while everyone takes a good look at me. Eyes move to me, but when I look up their eyes have already moved on. No one speaks to me, no one acknowledges my existence. I soon find out why. All the men and woman present in this room, excluding Jason and Zack's parents, are all Sentinels. That explains the weapons and the clothes. It also explains why they're ignoring me. 

They're stubborn sonofabitchs. They're used to kicking ass and only giving their respect and trust to those who earn it first.

"Has anyone got any information or evidence that may be able to lead us to the hunters?" Zack asks. His voice is full of authority, but his hand squeezes mine in gentle reassurance.

"No tracks left behind. No scent. They were wearing hunters spray to mask their scent. I rechecked the area around where the body was found three times and found nothing," a woman says. Her hair is fire red and her body slender but fit. Something I would've never be able to achieve.

"Ok, thanks, Maria," Zack says with a nod of his head.

It's easy for me to see his parents are slowly handing control over to him, they watch and listen. If they're needed they speak up, but right now, they're seeing just how well their son can do alone.

"I took a deeper sweep of the grounds, but also found nothing," a few of the answers are like this. Finally Rafe, the werewolf from earlier, comes into the room.

"I apologise for my absence, Alpha," Rafe says with a small bow of his head.

It's very apparent that the act is, and only is directed toward Zack and Zack's parents.
Zack's hand tightens on mine for a second. I don't understand it, but I rub my thumb over his hand, his grip loosens and he relaxes.

"Did you find anything?" Zack asks.

"I did, Alpha. Under some leaves where the body had been. It was easy to miss and it was only because I'd seen something earlier that I went back to see what it was," Rafe says as he comes toward us.

He hesitates a second. Casting a glance at me before looking back at Zack, as if wondering if it's ok to reveal what he's found in front of me. I tried to let go of Zack's hand, so I can move away, but his only tightens and he growls softly at Rafe in warning. Bowing his head in apology, Rafe holds up a gold ring. A ruby in its claws and an engraving inside the ring itself, which read, 'To my love, now and forever.'

"Did you manage to trace the ring?" Zack says. I swallow.

"I'm in the process, but it's going to take possibly two weeks," Rafe says.

Before even Zack can stop me, I take the ring from Rafe's fingers. He growls at me, but I just shoot him a look and he shuts up. Zack watches me closely, but he doesn't say anything as I inspect the ring, he just remains quiet as I look for the one thing I know will make my heart sink. And I find it. A small chip on the corner of the ruby, indistinguishable. Unless you know it's there.
