My eyes open slowly. The sun shines, blinding me. I close my eyes.
My whole body aches, as if every muscle inside me has been used. I hear the closing of curtains a second before the blinding light goes. I open my eyes once more, blink to clear them.

"Kaitlyn?" Zack says. The bed dips as he sits down, his hand touches my cheek gently.

My shields are falling and I can't let them, because we'll both get hurt in the end if I allow them to fall.

"Hey. How's my ankle?" I ask. The pain I felt earlier isn't there now, but I'm scared to move it, in any case.

"It's as good as new. No need for a cast," he says.

"Thank you, Zack," I say.

My heart beating a little too fast when he looks up into my eyes.

"I don't know what I would've done if..." his finger touch my lips lightly, cutting off my words.

"I'll always find you if you need me, Kaitlyn. Always," he's looking at my lips and god, but I want him to kiss me.

"What time is it?" I ask.

I force myself to look away. My heart aches. My shields weak as I hold them up. I can't allow my own feelings for him to jeopardise his life. They'd cut him down.

"Eight in the morning," he says.

My gaze shoots to his, then widen as I force myself to sit up. I try to stand but Zack grabs me around the waist and forces me to stay on the bed. He never hurts me, but my muscles protest against the sudden use.

"Zack, let me up. I need to go home. My parents are going to kill me," I say. Yet I don't fight him, I can't, my body's too worn out.

"Later. I'll take you home later. Right now, you need to rest. I'll go get you something to eat and drink," he says. He doesn't stand to leave until I lay back down on the bed.

"Zack... how did you find me?" I ask.

He pauses, then looks down at me. Back in the forest, I'd been sure I'd die out there. Now, Zack's standing in front of me.

"I heard you, Kaitlyn," he says.

As if that answers anything at all. He leaves the room before I can ask him what he means.
His words leave my mind in turmoil. The look in his eyes says he's hiding something, but then, that isn't my problem, is it?

I won't let Zack Garrison into my life, so why would he ever let me into his?

I began to stretch my body slowly. I know I need go slowly. But the more I stretch, the better my body feels. I move my ankle with caution. Zack seems to be right. I can move my ankle without pain; there's a small twinge every now and then, but it feels normal.

I smile.

I slip my legs out the bed, touch my feet to the floor and stand up slowly. I'm careful to stay near the bed in case my muscles fail on me. I take one step, then two. It hurts but not in a really bad way. I take a few more steps. My legs give out on me suddenly, without warning. I gasp as I fall, shutting my eyes tight as I wait to hit the floor. Yet, instead of the hard floor my body should hit, I'm grabbed around the waist. His arms tight and secure as he pulls me into his warm, hard chest.

"Next time you want to walk, wait until I get back," Zack says.

He picks me up before I have a chance to speak. He carries me, bridle style in his arms and I find myself unable to not wrap my arms around his neck and rest my head on his chest.
