It's dark. My body is heavy and all around me shouting, loud voices and lights that hurt my eyes. I moan and turn my eyes away, darkness comes once more.
"Kaitlyn," Zack says my name over and over again.
A hand is holding mine. A growl follows but still darkness is all I can see. A bang, light in my eyes, a silhouette over me. The slamming of a door. A prick on my arm that makes my head funny. Pain, aching pain in my neck, my arms; it grows and grows until I cry out. My voice doesn't sound like my own. My hands feel weak as they grip something. My nails dig in lightly as I cry out again in a hoarse voice. My eyes are foggy. A growl erupts around me; a prick in my arm once more. A single wet tear rolls down my cheek.
And then nothing.
No pain. No light. No voices. No sound. Nothing but darkness consumes me. My body floats and then pressure on my chest. It makes it hard to breathe. A coldness on my arm, a prick of a needle.
My eyes flash open. The light hurts and my eyes water.
I struggle against the hands holding me down. A loud bang of something hitting the floor and then a growl so loud it hurt my ears. The growl brings images, fragments of memory flooding back into my head. The rogue, the forest, Annie. A woman running away from a masked man in the forest. The walk to my car, the fear. Zack's name leaves my lips in a cry. Warm arms are suddenly surrounding me, holding me close, safe.
I'm safe with that growl. I reach out blindly. I need to feel safe. Someone is shouting. A voice I don't recognises. I scream Zack's name and there's a sudden silence before a scuffle of noise as if two bodies are fighting. It's over in seconds and his hand is holding mine. He pulls me to him and I'm no longer cold.
I can't open my eyes and my throat feels as if it's bleeding. I cling to him and I don't let go.
His arms around me tighten and I allow the darkness to take me once more, because I know I'm safe.I'm safe in his arms.
*
Quite voices.
I keep my eyes shut as my body becomes mine once more; slowly at first, and then more quickly. I can feel an aching in my neck and arms. I can recall everything that had happened in the attack. I can remember only small pieces of memory after the rogue bit me; strange fragments of jumbled memories. My main concern right this second however is Annie.
I hadn't been able to find her. She'd be worried. She wouldn't have left without me; she would have seen my car, known I hadn't left. She'd panic.
"I understand why you're acting like this. I do. But you need rest and she needs constant medical attention," a male voice says. I remember his voice, Zack's dad.
"I will give her the attention she needs and if she needs medical help, I will ask for it. Don't you ever, authorise something like this again, not when it concerns my mate," Zack growls.
Zack has a mate? Before I can think about it all, Zack's dad answers with a warning in his voice that threatens Zack's own words.
"I'm the Alpha of this Pack. I take care of my people. You haven't been sleeping, Zack. You were running on low. You couldn't've stayed awake much longer. You're my son, I'll not allow you to put your health on the line," Zack's dad says.
"You may be the Alpha of this Pack, but she is my mate. I would never double cross another pack member like you did to me," Zack answers.
I briefly think about leaving the room or going back into the darkness to give them some privacy. It sort of feels as if I'm eavesdropping on their conversation, but both ideas are useless.
