The rest of my day seems to go by in a blur of activity. Zack doesn't shows for the rest of his classes and after sitting in my last class, I learn he's gone home. Each and every time I think about that kiss, it leaves me feeling even more confused and terrified. Yet I can't keep allowing my mind to wander there.
I know sooner or later it'll be inevitable, that I'll end up thinking about the moment Zack and I shared and why. But for now, I focus all my attention on driving home safely.
Monday, the one night of the week my parents arrive home early. Most nights they don't get home until passed eleven, of a Monday they're home by five.
I pull my car into the drive and stop behind my mother's red Ferrari Spider convertible. My father's car, a sleek black Bugatti is parked next to my mother's. With my parents, it's all about keeping up appearances. They're actually talking about building a wall around the house and putting coded gates up for privacy. They've too much money to know what to do with. Instead of using it wisely and building things like orphanages or hostels for the homeless; they plan to build a wall around their house. In what why is that helpful? Even useful? Rainford is so damn quite, with crime and violence lower than most other small country towns, I just don't see the reason why my parent's think they need a wall.
My phone starts ringing as I open the front door and I cast one look at the unknown number before answering.
"Hello?" I ask. I close the front door behind me and head up the stairs.
"Hi, is this Kaitlyn Williams?" the caller is a girl, a young girl by the sound of her voice.
"Who's asking?" I ask. I slip into my bedroom, closing the door behind me.
"Oh, I'm sorry! My name's Emily Garrison. I'm Zack's younger sister," she says happily. I stop in the middle of my room.
"H-how did you get my number?" I ask.
"This is Zack's phone. Your number is stored... but you didn't know that, did you?" she asks cautiously. I think she's just realised she's put her foot in it.
I don't answer her question, instead I ask her one of my own, "Why are you calling me?" I sit down on my bed, dropping my bag to the floor.
"Well, you see... My brother left school earlier today after talking with you but he won't tell anyone what happened. I'm just wondering what you spoke about?" she asks.
I don't know whether I should be shocked at her outright question or if I should find it hilarious. I laugh leaves my throat.
"I'm sorry," I laugh, "Please forgive me, but that's the nosiest question anyone's ever asked me."
"I know, but..." she pauses.
"Emily, what the hell! Are you using my phone?" Zack's voice sounds from a distance and I'm suddenly nervous.
"I-I just wanted to talk to her," Emily says. I hear a loud growl before the phone is presumably taken from Emily's hand.
"Leave Emily," Zack's voice is close now and I swallow, debating whether I should hang up or not.
Before I can take the chickens' way out, Zack speaks, "Kaitlyn?"
"Zack," I answer, "Are you going to explain how you got my number?" I demand.
"No."
"Is that all you have to say, no?" I ask, scoffing softly, "Fine, you know what, I'm going to hang up."
"Wait..." he says. I pause, keeping the phone to my ear.
"What, Zack?"
"What did Emily say?" he questions.
