CHAPTER TEN

Everly sat at the Hufflepuff table a few days after all of their exams, wondering why her first  year at Hogwarts went by so quickly. She was sharing a laugh with Astrid and Lydia, digging into a bowl of macaroni 'n cheese, which sat in front of her. Over Astrid's shoulder, her amber eyes met with familiar stormy, grey ones. She stopped laughing suddenly, frowning slightly as Ryan looked away from her quickly.

"You alright, Ever?" Astrid asked, eyebrows furrowing at the previously giggling girl's silence, eyeing the small frown that tugged her lips downwards. "Is something wrong?" She continued, taking a bite of her own mashed potatoes. She shared a knowing look with Lydia, unknown to Everly.

"Everything's fine, I promise," Everly lied, not wanting to drag her friends down. She pursed her lips slightly, looking down with a small sigh as she pushed her bowl away. Ever since she had walked in on the Malfoy boys a few weeks ago, Ryan hadn't talked to her once. Harry, Hermione, Ron, Astrid, and Lydia saw this, but thought it was wise to not say anything.

Through the (almost) year that Everly had been at Hogwarts, the oldest Malfoy had dug himself a hole in Ever's heart, like Hermione, or Astrid, or Lydia. He had sat with her on the train, when he didn't have to. And despite being sometimes annoying when he dragged her along for his and his friends' pranks, she had grown to enjoy his company quite a bit. Him just ignoring her, pretending that she didn't exist, hurt Everly more than it probably should have.

"Well, then, turn that frown upside down!" Lydia exclaimed, smiling as she put her two index fingers on each of Ever's cheeks, from beside her, and tugged upwards. Everly looked at her, cheeks awkwardly pulled up into a smile, causing the three to start laughing again. "Oh, by the way, Frosty is shedding. I woke up this morning, covered in white fur." Lydia screwed up her face.

"I'll be sure to buy you a lint roller for Christmas, then," Everly playfully rolled her eyes towards the sky-charmed ceiling. "Is that good enough?" She asked sarcastically, grinning at the look on Astrid's tanned features and Lydia's pale ones.

"But Christmas is sooo far away," Lydia whined, giving Ever her best puppy dog eyes look, which happened to be quite good. She let her hands lay flat on the table, resting her chin on them and looking up through batting eyelashes at her fire-headed friend.

"Oh, you're good," Astrid complimented, nudging Everly, "only a monster could say no to that face," she looked pointedly in the direction of Lydia's pouting lips and wide eyes. She shook her head at the girl's antics, before bringing a spoon full of chocolate pudding to her lips.
