Lainie and William finally stood up after sitting together for a few minutes.

"Where are we staying?" Lainie asked again, apparently not caring about what William had already told her.

William shook his head. "I've told you, you're going home. I have to be a responsible adult for once."

Lainie shook her head. "I want to be with you, Will. Not dad or mom."

William sighed and ran his hand over his face. He wanted to say yes and whisk Lainie away with him. He wanted to tell her everything he knew about them and why he was running. But she was eight, and he didn't want to burden her.

"No."

Lainie stared at William. "Please? I'm not going back home either way."

William closed his eyes and leaned his head back. He needed to be without reminders of Boston to heal. But somehow, the girl standing in front of him made him feel better. William taking her with him wouldn't be good for her, but that was the rational side of his brain speaking.

William never thought rationally.
