We boarded out of the bus. Most of us seemed excited, our eyes beginning to light up, preparing ourselves for an amazing sight.
We were welcomed by a wonderful view of a three-story building.
There wasn't anything special about it, made it stand out. If anything, you probably would have missed it altogether if you had no idea how important the building is.
It had the appearance of a cheap apartment building, a flat roof, whitewashed walls, and windows so small I was surprised you would be able to see inside without the lights on.
I would be merciful to say that I was underwhelmed.
The people in my bus began to walk inside, in a much less lively mood than before, as the other bus arrived. Its passengers going through the same process as us. Excited, then disappointed.
I slowly walked towards the building, my backpack slung over my shoulder. Someone tapped me on the other shoulder. I didn't look, as I already knew it was Hermione, who liked to trick people by tapping them on their shoulders, then running as they peeked behind themselves, confused.
Not falling for that trick again, I thought, practically feeling Carol's smile on my back as I walked on, ignoring her.
I kept my eyes low, looking at the tile floor as I entered the building. There won't be anything to look at, anyway.
Suddenly I heard the sound of someone falling down a few feet behind me. What the fuck...
I look behind me, to see Brianna, near the doorway. Her right arm supporting her weight. She was looking up in amazement at the interior of the building.
I slowly turned around, getting ready to see anything from a crime scene to bright rainbow painted walls.
However, I was not ready to see a building MUCH bigger than three stories tall.
I almost fell down as well when I saw the huge structure. There was a porch on each level, so you could see through the middle, all the way to the roof. Because of this, I could immediately tell that there were at least ten stories, but I probably counted incorrectly, as I was still dazed by the sheer size of the area.
On top of that, there were huge workshops, lounges, and desk areas concealed behind thick glass walls. When I looked inside one of the workshops, I saw a tall, buff woman wearing overalls and a bandana around her neck. She was working on a hero suit. She was surrounded by mannequins that housed other outfits. The woman held out her hand, and a piece of scrap metal flew right towards her.
Everything was clean, and shiny, at least in the lobby. I saw a janitor mopping the floors and a receptionist desk in the middle of the room.
It was an understatement to say that I was overwhelmed. I was underwhelmed, now I'm overwhelmed. What's it like to just be whelmed? My mind began to wander off.
As more and more people filed inside, their mouths opened in shock and amazement. As AstroTech calmly strode in, she chuckled to herself, "Welcome to Hero Designs, the best hero suit company in America!"
Everyone, including me, spent so much time marveling at the sight, we didn't notice the woman who was working on the suits earlier approach us. She approached us, putting her hands of her hips, "Hello! You must be the students from White Star Academy on a field trip today!" She waved to us, as we all jumped back in surprise from the sudden, very loud, over enthusiastic voice. "I'm Jess, and I'll be your guide today!"
She strode over to the workshop where she had been building suits, "Here's where I work, building hero costumes all day. I would let you guys in, but it's too dangerous, with all the equipment and stuff lying around all over the place," she began to walk away, towards a room where a few people were sketching on iPads, "This is where all of the designs are made, or at least rough sketches of them." She continued on, pausing here and there, waiting for everyone to catch up. Behind us, AstroTech was pushing the stragglers in with the rest of the group.
I felt someone tap me on the shoulder, but I didn't look over, "I'm not falling for that Carol."
"Aww but this is so much fun!" A voice behind me half said half giggled. I immediately felt more pokes in the shoulder area. I continued on walking, trying to ignore them.
TIMEEEE SKIPPPP
"And finally, Floor 12! Here you will all be trying to convert a sketch into a hero suit for the rest of the day. I will be supervising you guys. If you need help, just ask us!" Jess announced this in an overly cheery manner. She tied her hair back in a loose ponytail, letting us inside of the workshop at the same time.
My mood immediately lowered, and I visibly deflated, if that was even possible. The past eleven floors I had sulked around, being poked in the back by Hermione for most of the time, and generally not wanting to be there. I can be pretty moody sometimes. Ethan says that annoyance is my default emotion. I hate to say this, but he's right. Gods, that was painful to say. I'll go wash my tongue with soap now.
Inside the workshop, which was much bigger than all the other ones we had seen that day, there were desks set up in a grid pattern, each with some sketches on them. In the corner of the room was a huge pile of materials and tools we would need.
I took my place at a desk on the outer rim of the room, and immediately started to examin the sketches. They all looked alien to me. The only thing I could make out was a mask and goggles on one of the sketches. The notes next to it stated that they were for helping the user breath sand see underwater. Hmm. I guess I'll just build this, then.
I set to work, collecting scraps of bronze, reshaping them based on the sketches. Jess came by to check on everyone's progress, and helped me a bit. She was the main reason my work actually looked decent. I was surprised to find that they worked, too.
I was examining the goggles when I heard someone clap their hands. I immediately looked up, to see Jess smiling at all of us, "That's it for today, guys! Hope you had fun. You probably didn't notice, but AstroTech was grading you all the whole time! Hopefully I'll see some of you next year, if you're sorted into the support course! By the way, you're welcome to keep what you made. Bye y'all!" She held her hand to the railing near the middle of the floor, where the square hole was. Suddenly, a piece of metal, a fire pole, was in her hand. She slid down it, and was gone. (Btw the quirk is called magnet. Couldn't find a place to fit it in there)
I was a bit taken aback that we were being graded. I hadn't seen AstroTech during the whole time we were tinkering. Now that I think about it, I looked around. The walls were a weird shade of grayish black and were shiny. I'm pretty sure the walls surrounding this room are one-sided windows. Totally not creepy at all.
Suddenly, AstroTech appeared in the doorway out of nowhere. She began to shout orders at us, "Now, we will leave in an orderly fashion. When we get to the school, there will be a short assembly and then-"
She was interrupted by the sound of metal clanging on the floor. Everyone's heads snapped in the direction of the sound. Brianna was stomping on her piece of metal, eyes starting to light up, threatening to cut open the ground with her laser beams, "GO AND DIE IN A HOLE, YOU USELESS PIECE OF JUNK!!! YOU'RE A LAME EXCUSE FOR A PIECE OF METAL!!! YOU SHOU-" She was interrupted before she could say anything worse.
"MS. NIGHTVISION!!! LANGUAGE!!! WE ARE IN A PUBLIC SPACE! DETENTION!" AstroTech screamed over Brianna, immediately silencing her. She turned towards AstroTech, but not in a manner that would suggest shame or guilt. She seemed angrier than before, her eyes lighting up even more.
Geez, she's got anger issues, I thought as I watched AstroTech tackle Brianna, trying to keep her still and stay calm.
Later...
A small, light blue bird flew in through the window of White Star Academy. Even though the halls were supposed to be crowded, they were empty, not a single person in sight.
A loud noise could be heard from outside, then a man yelled out, "THAT'S ENOUGH, MS. N-"
The bird couldn't hear any more, as it was too far away from the racket. And besides, it's was looking for something.
It finally found what it was looking for. It went through a door hat had been left ajar, and immediately exited the room, this time with some papers in its beak.
No one was there to witness any of these events unfold.
A. N. So I feel like I can't stick to a writing style, just like my art style. I'll try to work on that. I'm hungry now, ima go eat. Ok bye.
