Astrid POV

I sat down in class, my eyes never straying far from the door, waiting for Hayden to enter. I don't know why he would, it's 6th period and he hasn't been here all day.

I can't believe how blind I've been! Hayden's been looking ill, he's been depressed ever since he come back from the doctors for that "stomach" bug. He misses sport and he always has to go up to the office and misses a lot of school.

I feel bad. Hayden must have been sick for ages, months maybe. And it's taken a long time for me to start to worry.

The lesson ends and Hayden was yet to show up. The class piled up and I went up the front to talk to Gobber, he knew Hayden's family well.

"Hey sir," I start,

"Hey, lass, is this about your test?" He asked, I wince. I didn't do well.

"No, it's about Hayden,"

I could tell by the way Gobber stopped what he was doing and looked at me that he knew.

"Has he told Ye?" He asked, glancing at me with pity.

"Not exactly..." I place the medication on the desk, "I found this in his pocket,"

"Gobber, what's going on?" I pleaded.

"I'm not the one to tell you lass," he said, pocketing the medication to give to Hayden. "But... I'm going to visit him now... I'm sure you want to talk to him,"

I nod, "yes please,". Biting my tongue when I realised "visiting" either meant he was at the hospital, or too sick to leave home.

I helped Gobber pack up his stuff and sent a quick text to my teacher explaining why I won't be at dance - This is more important.

We walked past Gobber's car and that was the moment I knew he was at the hospital. The hospital was just a few blocks away from the school, while Hayden's house was the other side of town.

"So he's at the ... hospital," I mutter.

Gobber nodder seriously.

We walked into the waiting area and I was greeted by Hayden's mother.

"Gobber, and oh! Astrid, honey!" She brought me into a tight hug. "Did he tell you?"

I shake my head.

"She figured it out by herself," Gobber explained for me.

We walked in, still bracing myself for what to expect. I saw Hayden, curled up in a bed reading with a tube full of donated blood filtering in.

"Hey, Gobb-" he stopped when he saw me, he then avoided my gaze with guilt.

"I'll let you two talk," Gobber said as he backed from the room.

I looked up at Hayden, a tear falling down my face.

He's actually sick, it's not just a theory anymore, he's here in a hospital bed, looking at me with worry, sadness and guilt in his eyes.
