Hayden POV

"I'm on the waiting list for a heart transplant...and yeah..." I finish, my eyes linking with Astrid as she cried.

"Hayden, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry.. I can't believe I've been so blind!!" She said in a rush.

"Astrid!" I say, her voice filling my head with reasons that I should of told her. She looked at me worried before I said, "do you wanna get out of here?"

We checked with the nice nurses and avoided the mean ones until we were sitting in the local botanic gardens next to the hospital. Astrid and I sat awkwardly next to each other on a park bench overlooking a lake.

"Astrid, look I'm so sorry that I haven't told you...." she placed a finger to my lips.

"How about you play something?" She suggested, nodding to my guitar which I had brought along.

"Which-"

"Safe and Sound," she answered before I had even asked the question, I smiled and started strumming chords and the melody.

We smiled at each other, both watching my fingers dancing around the frets.

"I remember tears streaming down you face when I said I'd never let you go," we started. "When all the shadows almost killed your life,"

I looked up at Astrid, who was looking looking right at me... sadly.

We reached the chorus and Astrid's voice reached much higher than mine, creating a beautiful harmony from our two voices.

Just close your eyes, the sun is coming down you'll be alright no one can hurt you know
Come morning light
You & I'll be safe & sound

Astrid and I finished, we had somehow ended up closer than before the song, with her head close to mine.

She leaned in even closer and her lips somehow found their way to mine. I was surprised by the gesture, but I kissed back, moving my guitar away so we weren't uncomfortable.

What seemed like ages yet also seemed like milliseconds, we pulled away, awkwardly left staring at one another.

"Sorry," Astrid said awkwardly, unsure what this meant for our friendship.

"Don't be sorry," I told her, "I- well - I want this."

"Want what?"

"This...." I lean in to kiss her again.

It was short but sweet, when we broke apart we stayed close to one another.

"Ohhh... that, I want that too," she smiled, linking her hand into mine, putting her head on my shoulder as we watched a pair of toddlers feeding the ducks.
