Looking up at the clock, the time didn't even matter when she heard the keys jingle outside the front door. She tried to remember what the kumquat had told her. How did she activate the transformation again?

"Feathers up? Feathers away? Feathers leave!? Feathers fluff?! Feathers fluff!!" she whisper-yelled.

Finally, a glow surrounded her, blinding her vision. Blinking to regain sight, my father opened the door to find his own daughter laying under many chairs very late at night. Enraged that I was still up, he yelled at me to go to sleep while muttering as he fixed the fallen chairs.

I didn't have to think twice when I nodded and ran to my room. Changing quickly into a set of pajamas, I threw myself under the covers and stared at the ceiling. My brain hurt as I recollected the events that had just taken place. Suddenly, the kwanzaa appeared in front of my face gasping for air. Immediately biting my hand to muffle my scream, I glared at it intensely. Although it was probably my own fault for changing too quickly, I blamed the kleenex floating in front of her instead.

"Do you have any idea how heavy you are?" it gasped.

"It's not my fault you didn't tell me how to turn it off!" I whispered harshly.

"Well, it wasn't my choice to speak the forbidden words!" it snapped back.

"Forbidden words? You mean 'Duusu, f -'"

Its hands flew to my mouth, well at least I thought they were hands. I shut my mouth and she nodded letting me know I was right. Even though sleep was fighting for control, my eyes lit up. I know I spoke badly of the two costumed heroes protecting Paris, but I was ecstatic to become them. I had freaking superpowers! When I was a kid, I always had the silly dream that one day I would gain special abilities; I read too many comics. Always understanding that it would never happen, something inside of me just wouldn't give up the senseless hope. Now, that crazy dream that seemed to taunt me became a reality. I felt like weeping, screaming, and throwing myself out the window, all at the same time.

"Can we talk about this in the morning?" Duusu yawned.

"But I'm hungry, I need to eat!"

"What do you eat anyway? I don't think we have any dog food around the house."

She gave me a disgusted look, "I assure you that I am no dog."

"There is a small bag of chips on my desk. Will that do?"

"Finally, food!" Duusu cried in a hushed whisper.

"Aren't you going to tell me what my powers do now?"

"We can talk about it tomorrow. I can feel your tire; get some rest."

The mystical creature touched my forehead and my body was instantly drenched in sleep. My eyelids fluttered before they closed fully. Without another word, the thing floated to eat my stale chips. I let it munch on each chip as the sound became white noise.

Yawning, I woke up to the beautiful noise of the city. I could even hear birds chirping in the far distance; they'll be gone soon, winter is coming. The sun was bright and when I lifted my covers the cold air gave me goosebumps. I staggered to the bathroom still half asleep. I cringed at the creaks in the floor as I washed my face to get ready for the day. I grabbed the hanging towel blindly to dry my face. Looking back in the mirror there was a floating sparkle sitting on my head covered in black hair.

Jumping, I let out a grunt in both fear and slight annoyance. I completely forgot about my new fairy godmother. Don't get me wrong, it was a dream come true, but it was going to be weird having this thing live in my house.

"Where do you think you're going?" Duusu asked motherly.

"School, don't animals like you have a place to learn too?"

"I'm not an animal, I'm a kwami! My last master did not have to go to school, but I'm aware of the concept."

"Yea, yea, kwami. I would love to talk more about what you actually do, but I have to get to school or else I will be late. Keep yourself hidden, we can't let my parents see you."

"Stay here? A kwami is supposed to stay by their master at all times. I'm going with you."

"No, you're not."

"Yes, I am."

"No."

"Yes."

"No!"

"Yes!"

"Fine!"

I collapsed on the tile floor while covering my face with the soft towel in my hand. Not only was my kwami going to be living in the same house, but now it had to come to school with me. This superhero gig had more strings attached than I had anticipated. At least I could now keep an eye on it at all times. I'll make sure she stays hidden and away from my parents. Although, I have a feeling she is going to keep me out of trouble more than I'll help keep her out of sight.
