< Chapter 25 >

I throw another punch. And another. And another one with my other fist. By this point, my bloody fists became numb from the throbbing pain for the past few hours. I have to admit, throwing good punches is hard. I can never understand how they make it look so easy in movies. That must take a lot of training. But it's all for a reward. I can now aim a strong punch and my latest punches made two trees crack and threaten to fall. I'm not as mean so I change trees every time I hear a crack. Don't want nature against me.

Are you sure it's the tree cracking or your bones? Because I'm out of energy. We haven't really eaten dinner since Matt decided to be a douche.

Okay... Enough punching trees for one day. But we still have to stay a bit. It's about midnight now, Michael should be coming.

I rip my white t-shirt and wrap it around my knuckles to stop the bleeding. It will heal soon anyway, but I can't stand the sight of blood. As I take in my surroundings and look for any movement, I hear a few rustles behind the trees but they don't stop. I take a few steps forward to take a look at what's causing the noise. Could it be Michael? But why wouldn't he just appear quietly like he always does?

''Emily'' Someone says as they put their hand on my shoulder from behind me. I jump up from my place and scream. I turn around to eye the person.

''What the hell? You gave me a heart attack!'' I ask as I quickly hide my bloody hands from his eye-sight.

''Sorry, I didn't mean to. But you were out for a long time, I thought I'd check up on you'' He says softly.

''Oh...''

''Are you okay?'' He asks.

''I think that's the third-hundredth time someone asked me that in the past two weeks, and the answer will always be the same. I'm alive therefore I'm okay'' I laugh without any humor.

''I wanted to come earlier but Jess wouldn't let me saying you needed time. So do you wanna come back in? It's kind of late now and you have to wake up early tomorrow, remember?'' Liam says as he puts his arm on my left shoulder.

''Uh... Can I stay out here a bit longer?'' Shit. What am I supposed to tell him? I need to stay. Can't afford to make problems with Michael. I mean it's not like he'll be happy with my choice but still. Come up with something Emily...

''Sure, I guess, but why?'' He asks, unsure.

Say whatever. Soph says, panicked.

''I- I am not ready to go back in and face the others'' I say and understanding flashes in his eyes. Sophia blows out a breath mentally but it's short lived when he says; ''Okay, I'll stay with you until you're ready, it's not exactly safe out here''

''Uh no! There's no need for that! I won't be long, you don't have to'' I say in a hurry. Michael might come out any minute and I can't risk Liam staying here, who knows what Michael would do? And telling Liam won't be an option, yes he seems cool but so was my dad and he was overprotective as hell, I just didn't know that until I turned fifteen.

''Are you sure?'' He eyes me as if he's expecting me to spill. Uh-Oh. I can't make him think I'm lying.

''Yes, I'm sure. I promise I'll come in soon, just a few more minutes'' I step up and give him a tender sweet kiss, they say charming a man makes him lower his guard right? I think I made that up, but hopefully, it's right. ''I promise''

''Okay, if you say so'' I smile at him while nodding, ''But I'll come to get you if you don't come back in the next ten minutes''

Of course, you will... And just when I thought I convinced you. Liam goes in the forest again and walks away until I can't hear his footsteps, he must be far enough now.
