The next week passed in a blur. I was almost certain Nathan Monroe had a house picked out but he'd insisted on seeing more properties. Twice I had taken him house hunting but I was dead set on keeping our relationship strictly professional. By no means was that easy...He had a knack for flirting. Once I had let my guard down and accepted a lunch proposal. I couldn't let that happen again.
This morning though, he had called and said he was ready to make an offer on a house that was located in one of the suburbs of the city. The news was good, I was ready to 'get rid' of him. He was a distraction that I didn't need especially when I was working on my marriage that seemed to only be one sided. To run away from everything would be so easy, but I couldn't.
The office was almost empty on a Saturday. Amber didn't dare come in on the weekends, as she had a family. I'd only had one showing in the morning and for the rest of it I just got my appointments and open houses in order for next week. The schedule was packed full and I wouldn't even be able to rest for a second. It was nearly one o'clock in the afternoon when I looked up from my computer and found John standing inside of my office with a takeout bag in his hand and a cup in the other.
I frowned up at him but replaced it with a smile. He'd said he would be working himself for the day yet here he was. Was he going to make a habit out of popping into my office unannounced? Not that I cared. Maybe it would help our married that seemed to be slowly burning out as the days passed...or was that just the way I felt? "Hey. What a surprise." I stood up and met him at the other side of my desk.
"Just thought I would bring my wife some lunch. Chinese. Fried rice and green tea." The smile he gave me was charming and for a second I forgot about all of the problems in our life. It was like the man I had married was standing in front of me. Unfortunately it didn't last long. Reality came creeping back like a threat in the night. I took the brown bag he held out along with the drink and sat in on the desk.
"Oh. Well, thank you." I returned the smile and he easily stepped around me to lean against the desk. When he pulled me against him, I was surprised at the flutters that invaded my belly. I wished that this was true. Wished that things could go back to the way they were when we had first married. Our love had been genuine. Now...half of it was lies. Mainly from him but my list was growing. Slowly but surely.
"I was thinking we could go see a movie tonight." John suggested as he swept a strand of hair away from my cheek. I took notice of his strong hand on the small of my back, pulling me closer between his legs. I felt skeptical about the invitation...prayed then that if he had any intent to stand me up, he would at least call first. Most of his weekend time was dedicated to the office space he rented...Tomorrow-Sunday night-he would have poker with his friends.
"I would like that." Of course, I agreed. I had no other plans for the evening. And if it meant John being with me and not someone else....We kissed then and I forced the unwanted mental images of him with her out of my brain. The kiss was grainy, sexual, loving and I wished that all of them were like this. When we parted, John's golden gaze slid over the crown of my head and he looked passed me. It took me a moment to realize that the presence of someone else was there and I turned around, breaking our embrace.
