The 71st Hunger Games

Chapter 18:

I wake with a start. Someone is calling my name. I groan. The Games start today. The same person calls my name again. I realise it's Blight calling my name. That's a suprise, Ablothia usually shouts at me to wake up. Slowly, I get up and slip on a white vest top and jeans. I open the door and step out into the hallway.

"Where is Ablothia?" I ask.

"In the lounge... crying. Don't take it personally. She always cries on the morning the games start," he replies.

We walk to the dining room and eat breakfast. I have an orange and water.

"Come on, eat up. You don't know how much food you will have in the arena," Blight says, passing me a croissant. I suppose is right. I take it and eat it slowly. I also have some apple juice.

Blight and Ablothia say bye to me and Lazail as we walk towards the hovercraft. As I get into it, I see all the other tributes. I feel a shiver go up my spine. Causiously, I sit down next to a girl that looks about 13. I think she is from District 5. The Hunger Games are sick. Innocent children are put in an arena to fight to the death. Lazail sits next to me.

I see my stylist, Loveria, as I walk into a grey room with a tube. "Here you go," Loveria says, passing me an outfit for the games. It's a tight black playsuit with a bit of red and grey on the shoulders. Before I get in to the tube, Loveria a rubs yellowy-white lotion on to my bare skin. I think it's suntan lotion, so it must be really sunny.

"Ten seconds," says a woman though the speaker in the corner of the room.

"Well... bye," I say turning around to face the tube.

"Goodbye," Loveria replies.

As I step into the tube, I turn to face Loveria. Her eyes are starting to water. I don't understand why, we didn't really know each other. Suddenly, the tube begins to ascend. After a few seconds, everything turns bright and hot.

"Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favour," says the Head Gamemaker.

As my eyes adjust to the brightness of the arena, the countdown begins.

The arena is a desert. There is sand nearly everywhere. Luckily, to the left of me in the distance, I see some trees.

I also see a survival pack close to me also on my left.
