Midnight

I look out over the city at night. I get lost in the sea of bright lights, honking car horns, and people talking with each other down on the street. As I look up I see the stars in the sky. I recognize some of them. Aries, Leo, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Sagittarius. A breeze blows through my hair as I stare at the mountains in the distance. It's a clear night, not a cloud in the sky. I pull my coat tighter around myself. Closing my eyes I let the wind move the sounds around me. Opening my eyes I see the river over to my right. The light reflecting off the water calms me. I think of how long it took for them to build this city. It might not be perfect to someone else, but it sure is for me.

I open up my window and stare out at the sky. My eyes reflect the starry sky above me. I'm soon down on the porch swinging on the swing. My feet brush against the rough wooden floor. I forgot to put shoes on. I hop of the swing after a couple minutes and find myself wandering out down the path. I pull my coat tighter and turn off the road. The wet grass sticks to my feet as I see that I am down by the creek. I turn behind me. I can still see the porch light of my house above me. I wade into the water. Closing my eyes I listen to the new sounds that the wind brings. The far off honking horns from the road leading into the city. A truck every now and then that drives down the road away from the country. The steady hum of the crickets spread out over the grass. I head back to the house. Before I go inside I turn around and stare out over the countryside. It might have its flaws, but it sure seems perfect to me.

At midnight...

people see the sky...

they see the stars...

it might not be perfect to everybody...

but to me...

it's pretty darn close.
