2:00 p.m.
"Mother!” I heard my sister yell as she and her friends burst through the front door.
“What sweetheart?” Kodeniˊ questioned as she entered into the living room from out of the kitchen.
“I need you to come shopping with.” she answered.
“For what?” she questioned. “Shopping for what?”
Layla gleamed and looked around the room at us for a moment. “I’m moving out!” she exclaimed.
My mother looked around anxiously before speaking. “Moving where?” she questioned.
“Darien found us a beautiful penthouse in downtown Chicago.” she answered. “Oh My God mama!” she exclaimed. “You’re gonna’ love it.” she told us. “All of you.” she told the rest of us.
“Well I’m happy she leavin’,” my twin brother announced obnoxiously. “Now all we need is for Lola to disappear and life will be perfect.”
I smacked my lips and rolled my eyes at his comment. “Shut up Logan.” I dissed. I looked over to my mother face and noticed the distraught look on her face. “What’s wrong mama?” I questioned.
Layla looked down and became concerned too. “Yeah mama what’s wrong?”
Kodeniˊ contemplated for a moment, but offered up an answer. “I just don’t think you’re ready to move out yet Layla.” She admitted.
Layla huffed and rolled her eyes. “Mama,” she began. “I’ll be fine.” she assured her. “Trust me this is for the best.” Kodeniˊ didn’t say anything more. “Now will you and my little come with me and my friends to the store so we can go pick out furniture for my new home?” she questioned. A smile appeared on my mother’s face and she agreed. Kodeniˊ quickly jogged up stairs to go retrieve her purse; seconds later she returned down stairs and we headed for the door.
We all squeezed into the cherry red Dodge Hemi Charger, and as I sat in the backseat I couldn’t help but to feel sad. If my sister left that meant no more cute clothes, no more loud kids, and no more bickering with her. I didn’t want my sister to move out, especially just to move in with her abusive baby daddy, but when my sister had her mind made up it was no stopping her.
Within an hour we reached a furniture store. Layla parked the car and we hopped out. We walked up to the store and entered inside. Me, my mother, Angel, Diamond, and Tyrone followed behind Layla as she trailed us through the plush store. “Is there anything I can help you with?” a slender, white man with long hair asked.
“Yes.” Layla answered. “Can you get me the manager?” she questioned.
“Of course.” he agreed and then walked away. Seconds later the man returned back with his boss. “This is the lady who asked for you.”
“I know this woman.” the chubby Italian man said. “Layla, darling it’s nice to see you in here.” He greeted as he pulled her in for a hug. “How’s everything?” he questioned.
“Everything is everything.” she answered vaguely.
“Glad to hear.” he said. “How’s Darien?”
“He’s Darien.” she answered nonchalantly as they both shared a laugh.
After a few seconds of their casual conversation the man turned to the slender white man and instructed him to follow after Layla and tend to her every need in the store. The man agreed and then the Italian, before leaving turned back to Layla and told her that everything her heart desired was half price. They exchanged one last hug and he walked away leaving us and the tall white man to shop. We all trailed behind Layla as she went about placing marks on everything on her brown eyes saw. We had been in the store for about a half an hour and I, for one was starting to become impatient. “You seem like you got this all under control.” I stated. “What you need us here for?” I questioned.
