If it’s one thing I’ve come to realize is that my mother: Kodeniˊ Lee King is crazy; she does not play. When she first found out that Lay was pregnant she went ballistic, and in order to prevent me and Logan from heading down that road she began to restrict us and have sex talks. Kodeniˊ began to check more into our social life, which caused tension and a little resentment. For example, the animosity towards Layla and I is still there simply because in a way it’s her fault as to why my absentee mother feels the need to be all up in my business now; not only that she’s also responsible for my father not being home.
That’s a different story so let me get back to the point. Like I said ever since Kodeniˊ found out about Layla’s pregnancy she’s felt the need to give these morning lectures towards me and my twin that centered around the ‘birds and the bees’. Do you know how it feels to discuss a topic with a family member you never even been close with? Yeah awkward . . . right? It’s like tryna’ tell someone who you’ve been crushin’ on from a distance that you love them. The talks always go the same: she call us down, ask us a couple questions, reminds us of shit, and then get to the lectures. We always sat there awkwardly as we listened to her talk and today were no different. “What do you know about sex?” she questioned.
“Well,” Logan began and then proceeded to tell her everything he knew. Logan admitted that he wasn’t a virgin and that he had lost it around sometime last year. The look on my mother’s face was priceless. Kodeniˊ cleared her throat and regained her composure. She turned my way and asked the same question. My cheeks turned red and my hands began to sweat. “Yeah what’cha know ‘bout it Lo’?” my brother repeated mockingly.
I shot him a glare and then turned back to my mother. Finally muscling up the words I spoke. “Huh?” I questioned.
“You hear me,” she continued. “What you know ‘bout sex?” she questioned.
“Do I have to tell you?” I questioned as I slouched back in the black dining room chair.
“Yes,” she answered matter- factly.
I huffed but began talking. “I know that if he doesn’t use a condom and he ‘nuts’ in you, you can get pregnant.” Continuing and reassuring her I said, “And I know that my beautiful mother taught me to have sex when I’m good and ready not when he’s good and ready.”
“Are you a virgin?” she questioned.
“Yes mama’,” I answered. “I plan on saving it until college.” I admitted.
“Good choice,” Layla agreed from over in the living room. Me and my mother both turned to her.
“Would you continue nursing your daughter?” my mother joked. A smile spread across Layla’s face as she shrugged her shoulder. “Like your sister said good choice,” Kodenniˊ agreed. “but I doubt you will.”
“And why is that?” I asked.
“Because that boyfriend of yours is to scrumptious.” she complimented.
I chuckled at my mom’s ridiculous compliment, and I didn’t know rather to be flattered or bothered by it. “Mom!” I yelled.
“Yeah on that note I’ma go.” Logan announced. He stood up and headed for the door.
“Yeah, Yeah, okay,” she said. “but I ain’t done with you yet boy.” she warned. Logan shook his head okay. “And don’t be bringin’ me no more grandbabies either.” she reprimand playfully. Logan stuck his tongue out at me and then headed out the door.
“Why am I taking offence to this conversation?” Layla asked.
“Back to you,” my mother uttered. “What’s this boy name?” she questioned.
“Jamal,” Layla answered before I could.
“He got a last name?” she asked.
“Vaz-“ I began.
“Vazquez,” Layla blurted again.
“Layla!” I yelled in pure irritation.
“Lola!” she mocked.
“Hey!” my mother intervened. She turned towards Layla. “Take baby Kae and feed her,” she demanded. “Me and Lola need to some alone time, okay?”
“Tryna’ get rid of us?” Layla joked. “Fine me and Kae don’t wanna’ stay where we ain’t welcomed anyway.” She gathered all of baby Kaedence belongings and went upstairs.
Once we heard the footsteps on the stairs stop my mother told me to continue. “Well, he plays basketball, he’s a senior, and he’s sweet.” I told her.
“Is he a virgin?”
“Yes.” I answered.
“That’s good ‘cause I wanna’ meet him.” she announced.
“Why you wanna’ meet him?” I questioned. “I just told you everything you need to know.”
“That’s not the point Lola,” she stated.”I’m your mother and I want to meet him.”
“No offense I’m not Layla so you don’t gotta’ worry about that stuff happening to me.” I told her.
“What does Layla’s situation have to do with you? This is something way different, I need to know how this nappy-headed boy thinks.” she told me.
“It sure ain’t the way Logan or Darien thinks, okay.” I stated smartly.
In a motherly tone Kodeniˊ demanded. “You’re gonna’ bring him over here this weekend.”
“No I’m not,” I defied. “I don’t need you to be worried about me.” I told her.
“I don’t care what you need Lola, I’m your mother and what I say goes, and I say you’re bringing him over.”
“No I won’t.” I defied again.
“No. . .no?” she repeated as her eyes began to match a deer in headlights. “Did you just tell me no?” she questioned. “Have you lost your little young ass mind? What the fuck you mean no?” she questioned.
Taking a leap of faith I said, “You heard me I said no.” I continued. “Since when did you become so interested in my life?”
“Little girl,” she began. “I’ma pretend that you don’ bumped that big head of yours and forgot who you were speaking too,” she insulted. “’Cause I know damn well ya’ ain’t talkin’ to me.” she warned.
“Well I am.” I mouthed off more.
She calmly shook her head okay. “Well I still want to meet him.”
“No,” I defied once more.
“Well then it looks like if I can’t meet the little nigga then Lola Lee Flores just won’t be dating this so called basketball player.” With that she began to walk up the stairs leaving me standing at the bottom.
“You can’t do that!” I yelled up to the top floor.
Kodeniˊ scoffed. “Watch me.” she warned.
