song for this chapter: complicated by Olivia O'Brien

"Why do you have to go and make things so complicated?"

Ambers pov

Nothing.

I had received nothing from Ethan since giving him my number; one week ago.

No text, no call, I haven't even spoke to him since last Wednesday.

To be honest, I was beginning to get the unsettling feeling that the asshole was avoiding me.

There would be a few random times where I would catch him sat in the cafeteria alone, but it was almost as if as soon as I blinked, he was gone.

As I sat at the dinner table with my parents, all my mind could think about was, why Ethan was trying so desperately to be alone.

Most people would have given up on him by now. They would have come to the realisation that he wasn't worth the time.

But not me.

There was something about this kid. It was like my whole mind was consumed by him. I felt drawn to Ethan; almost how a magnet feels attracted to another one.

Except this time, the other magnet wasn't attracted to me.

I twirled the remainder of my food in my fork, no longer finding the appetite to eat it.

As I thoughtlessly watched my parents engaged in their own meal, the sound of my phone buzzing with a notification sounded from beside me.

My eyes darted towards the lit up screen, as I picked it up almost immediately; hoping Ethan had finally decided to text me.

However, that hope was quickly crushed down into nothing, when I realised it was only Anna.

My eyes scanned carelessly over the short text that she had sent me.

I deeply exhaled a deep breath, placing my phone back on the table, not even bothering to reply to my friend.

My parents must have noticed the stressed expression on my face, because they both shared a quick glance between one another, before staring back at me.

"Everything alright, honey?" My father enquired, his eyebrows narrowed.

I pressed my lips together for a moment, before letting out a deep, long sigh.

"There's this boy." I rolled my eyes as I began to explain the story of Ethan to my parents; who were now both perked up, interested in the conversation topic.

I told my parents everything. We are a very close knitted family, and I saw them as more of best friends than just parents.

As I continued to explain the situation to my parents, they began to share multiple glances between one another. My mom even had a small smile painted at her lips.

"Well, I think it's great that you want to help this boy out. It sounds as if he could use a friend." My father smiled at me once I was finished, his hand cupping over mine.
