I remember that fateful day like it was yesterday. It's been ten years but it doesn't get any easier.

Flashback....

There was a thunderstorm that night, it was pouring and really windy. We were at my best friend Diego's house, La Hacienda (The Ranch). I loved spending time with Diego in his home, we would run all around the house playing tag then we would go outside and ride the horses. Diego is my bestfriend, we've been friends since we were in diapers.

Our parents grew up together and are also bestfriends. My father Francisco worked for Diego's dad, my father was his lieutenant. The second highest position in the drug cartel organization. My father was part of The Alvarez Cartel, and the Capo (drug lord) was Diego's father Rodrigo. My father and Rodrigo had alot of enemies, we would always recieve death threats but we were always safe and protected.

Until today.

We were all gathered in the living room when we heard the gunshots and screams. Next came the explosions, glass shattering all around the Hacienda. Rodrigo gave the order to lock up all the women and children in one of the safe rooms, while the men went out to fight.

I screamed for my Dad not to leave but he said to be brave and that he would be right back. Tears were running down my face watching him walk away knowing he wasn't coming back. We heard more gunshots and yelling, the gunshots were getting closer to us. Then all we heard was silence, the only thing you could hear was the thunder and rain outside.

Then the door of the room came crashing down on us while our mothers covered us with their bodies. Diego and I screamed as they opened fire on us, killing our mothers in the process.

"Take the kids and kill anyone who gets in your way" one of the men yells.

They grab me separating me from Diego, I scream for him to help me but it's useless we were only kids. Suddenly I feel a smack to my face and then they scream at me to be quiet.

Then I see Diego struggling to fight the guy holding him to get to me. He's screaming for them to leave me alone. They hit him and scream at him to be quiet, but he doesn't. So they shoot him, I see him fall over holding his stomach, blood running down his shirt. I run to him, he's quiet and he's not moving.

I shake him and say, "Diego, please get up, I'm scared. Diego wakeup please, please don't leave me alone." I cry.

They grab me and throw me in the back of a van full of other kids that I don't recognize. The last thing I see is them setting fire to the Hacienda. That was the last time I saw my friends and family.
