"Maddy, I really don't think you need a will" David said, laying next to her on her hospital bed. Maddy's muscle numbness had deteriorated rapidly within the last 24 hours. Despite this, Maddy was on the war path to get her things in order. "You're not going to die"

"But I could"

"But you won't"

The corner of Maddy's mouth upturned a bit, but she wasn't smiling.

"Listen, a lawyer will be here within the next hour and i'm gonna fill out the paperwork. Best case scenario I don't need it, but worst case scenario it's there"

David sighed and pulled Maddy a little closer.

"What documents are you trying to get in order?"

"I want a will. I'm also making sure we get the ball rolling on making sure Cecelia has Slovakian citizenship in case god forbid you get deported. I also want a plan for if that happens before she gets approved"

"Jesus" David breathed, squeezing his eyes shut as if to block out the morbidity.

Maddy put her hand on David's.

"I know it sucks, but it needs to be done"

David sighed.

"I also want to talk to you about some things"

David looked over at Maddy.

"I wanted to write Cecelia a letter, but my arm muscles aren't in the best shape" Maddy continued, loosely flopping her arm. "So I recorded a video"

David closed his eyes and leaned his head back in a poor attempt not to cry.

"When did you do that?"

"This morning. Can I email it to you? You don't need to watch it, I just want you to show it to her when she starts asking about me"

"Can you not say when?" David asked softly.

Maddy smiled a little.

"Sorry, if you need it"

They sat in silence for a few seconds.

"Email it to me" David finally said.

Maddy nodded.

"What else did you want to talk about?" David asked, wiping under his eyes.

"I think it's important that you hear this from me... if you need it"

David looked at Maddy as she looked past David for a moment.

"I really want Cecelia to have a mom" Maddy said.

David tilted his head a little, not completely understanding.

"So if you find someone, I don't want you to feel guilty moving on" David covered his eyes with his hand, inhaling deeply before letting out a shaky exhale. "I know it sucks. I know you don't want to talk about this, I cannot stress enough how much I know this absolutely sucks, but you're going to need that advice.... if the time comes"

David laid with his head back for a while, not saying anything.

"You didn't need to tell me that"

Maddy squeezed David's hand.

"Yeah, hopefully not"

"I think you're being very cautious, because this could be the worst you get"

"But it historically hasn't been. David, I seriously thought I was gonna die last time"

"But you didn't, and you won't"

"I... yeah, ok. I hope you're right."
