Maddy covered her hand with her mouth. Both tests were positive. Not lightly positive, definitely positive. She googled the efficacy of pregnancy tests and read the reviews of the brand and saw that a) pregnancy tests are very accurate when it comes to positives, and b) the brand was the best they sold in France. She felt a cold wave hit her. I didn't actually expect these to be positive. She thought. She had scared herself into buying pregnancy tests before, when she had been even more convinced that she was pregnant, and she had always been overreacting. She sat on the edge of the clawfoot tub. How the fuck is David going to react? She thought to herself. She put her hand on her face and stared at the test. Some amount of time had passed before she heard David call her name through the door. She stood up and opened the door clumsily.
"David..." She started.
"What time did you want to head out? I'm just about done with this video"
"Um, I just..."
"What's up?" David asked, looking concerned when he saw Maddy's face.
"I, uh, just took two pregnancy tests" She said.
"Oh?" David laughed a little, leaning against the doorway.
"I-"
"I'm sure it'll be fine, this isn't our first rodeo" He laughed again. "Do you want me to check with you?"
"David, I already checked"
"Then why are you so freaked.... out..... oh...." David's eyes widened slightly.
David walked past Maddy into the bathroom and grabbed a test off of the counter, then grabbed the box, putting it down once he realized it was completely in French. He was quiet for about 10 seconds, just staring at the test in his hand.
"This isn't a prank, right?" He asked softly.
Maddy shook her head.
"So..... you're telling me that you're pregnant?"
"I mean, well, yeah"
"Swear to God?" David asked.
"David, yes"
David laughed.
"You're not serious" He said, looking at the test again. "Are you?"
"David, you know I don't like pregnancy pranks because I think they're bad karma"
For some reason, this was the sentiment that made things click with David. His smile wavered for a second as his eyes widened.
"Maddy..." He said, looking at her.
Maddy, who had processed nearly nothing about the situation, just looked at the test on the counter.
David paced back and forth, looking at the test with his hand over his mouth. Maddy ran her hand through her hair, looking at the test in David's hand. Time seemed to stand absolutely still as Maddy stared at the tiles on the floor.
"Oh my God" He whispered, looking at the test again, then looking to Maddy, who had tears silently falling from her eyes.
His eyebrows creased in concern as he put the test down lightly on the counter and gently took Maddy's hands in his. He looked at her for a moment before using his thumb to lightly brush a tear off her cheek.
"Are you ok?" He asked.
Maddy smiled a little and nodded, laughing while wiping the remaining tears from under her eyes. He smiled before grabbing her face and crashing his lips into hers.
"Are you happy?" Maddy asked as they pulled apart.
"I mean... are you ready to... have a baby?" David asked, his smile faltering a bit.
"I mean, we're 24, we make... millions, we both own cars, you own a house..."
"If that's a yes, then...." The smile crept back onto David's face.
Maddy smiled, making David smile even wider.
"I had no idea how you would react" Maddy sniffled.
"To finding out i'm going to be a dad?" David asked, laughing. "Especially after Josh and Paige's baby?"
Ever since Josh and Paige's first child was born, David had nonstop talked about how cute the baby was and often joked about how he wanted one. He would always hide it with a thinly veiled "I'm just kidding, Maddy, calm down"
"Ok, fair enough" Maddy laughed.
David pulled Maddy into a tight hug, rocking back and forth with her a little before kissing her on the forehead. David then began to laugh, pulling back from Maddy.
"Why are you laughing?" She asked, leaning back on the counter.
"Because, do you know why we're here?"
"To celebrate the travel ban lift"
"No"
"No?" Maddy asked, looking up at David.
"No." David shook his head.
"Then... why are we here?"
"One minute" David said, walking over to his backpack and grabbing the box with the ring and putting it in his pocket.
"Wait, come here" David said, taking Maddy's hand and leading her out onto the balcony.
"So you could see the Eiffel tower?" Maddy asked, furrowing her brow a bit and laughing.
David shook his head.
"Do you see that over there?" He asked, pointing to the left of the Eiffel tower.
"What?"
Maddy turned so her back was to David, who got down on one knee.
"David what the fuck am I supposed to be looking at?" She asked, turning back around.
She gasped a little when she saw David on one knee.
"Well, I was gonna do this a little more romantically but... Maddy Laurent, will you help me get a green card?" David asked.
Maddy and David both cracked up laughing as Maddy nodded and David put the ring on her finger.
