PROLOGUE.

raging sea and broken shells
a sad boy standing on the water's edge
angry winds and rolling tides
a sad, sad boy - and no love in sight

● ● ●

I.

the waves rise and fall like the seasons of life
their murky depths darker than the blackest of nights
but to the lonely boy, this cold watery grave is a warm invite
dark the ocean is, but not half as dark as the demons in his mind

one step forward,

- two steps back.

two steps forward,

- one step back.

three steps forward,

- no stepping back.

( someone please hold me back ! )

II.

the water kisses his toes; its icy touch feels like Death
his heart is hurting; his mind is set
the sea is beckoning; there is no reason to fret
at last, it's time to put the warring demons in his mind at rest

one step forward,

- Death shyly reaches past his feet.

two steps forward,

- Death desperately clutches his calves.

three steps forward,

- Death hungrily licks at his shaking knees.

( someone please save me ! )

● ● ●

III.

there is endless pain behind him and such sweet relief ahead
too many dreams destroyed, too many tears have been shed
too much hurt has festered, too many fears have been bred
if he can't have happiness, he will embrace nothingness instead

one step forward,

- Death hugs his waist.

two steps forward,

- Death clings to his chest.

three steps forward,

- Death stares at his face with a feral grin.

( why did no one come to save me ? )

IV.

as he stares at Death, eye-to-eye
his breathing shallows, heart seized by a terrible fright
now that he has reached The End, he is too scared to die!
now that he has locked eyes with Death, he craves for Life!

oh, how fickle and ungracious the human heart is, when placed in plight
when its wishes are granted, why does something else catch its sight?
with nothingness so close, why does it no longer feel right?
the soul that yearned for simple Death can now finally realise
there's a twisted sort of beauty in chasing after Life

EPILOGUE.

love without might be sparse, but can lie in abundance within
there is still no helping hand but -
he thinks he can finally sense a divine sort of Light
it tells him he can be his own saviour
even if there is no valiant superhero in sight!

Death is determined, destructive, defiant and destined
but he is no longer going down without a fight

p.s. in case anyone thinks there was a typo, I just want to clarify that the word "without" in the first line of the epilogue is used as an adverb, not preposition hence why it doesn't have an object :)

p.p.s randomly decided to read this poem again and oh god i am cringing so hard
