Chapter 6: Dinner

POV (Kadi)

It;s almost dinner!  But, who am I kidding with this crush stuff?  He doesn't like me, he doesn't know me!  He was probably just putting on his charm or whatever he does to girls like me when he hugged me.  I would kill to be his girlfriend, but so would a million more girls that probably have more to offer.  

I can just try to impress him for now, who knows? Maybe I AM his type. Maybe one day I will be Hayes Grier's girlfriend.

POV (Hayes)

I've decided, I'm going to ask Kadi out on a date.

Tonight

After dinner, when the parent's are talking, i'm going to pull her aside and just do it!

"Nash!" I yell. " I need help!"

Nash walks down the stairs in his black and white, flowy, weird, almost girly, legging, type pants and a grey sweatshirt.

"What's up haaaas?" he says jokingly

"I like Kadi, I think i'm gonna ask her out tonight, what do you think?" I ask

"Dude, she definitely likes you back, but take it slower. Don't come on too strong like a clingy freak." he says.

"But, if she likes me back, why do I need to take it slow?" I ask, trying to avoid the fact that he's right.

"Ok, man. Do what your gut tells you." he says with a roll of his eyes. "But remember, Kadi's going to be your neighbor. Don't screw things up." he says as he does that weird thing where he flicks his hair really slowly.

"yeah..."

I just don't want to think about how I could ruin things. 

POV (Kadi)

Dinner is about to go down, and i'm sure Gretchen and Skylynn will hit it off! They both love pink and glitter and little girl things.

I hope I hit things off with Hayes!  I want him to be interested in me.

Ding dong

That's them!

Barbara runs to the door in her high heels and greets the Griers.

"Hellooo hellooo come in come in!  Elizabeth I love your dress!" she peeks behind Elizabeth Grier and there is little Skylynn

"Skylynn your dress is beautiful! You look like a movie star!" she says.  Skylynn giggles and twirls in her pink sparkly dress.

Hayes and I lock eyes and he fiddles with his hands, rubbing them together and such.

"Well let's all sit down and eat!" Barbara exclaims.

We all settle and have sliders, macaroni salad, baked beans, and other barbecue foods.

My dad always makes the burgers kind of pink on the inside, and I like my burgers almost crispy all the way through; NO PINK.  I always feel like my mouth is full of cow blood when there is any pink in my meat.

 I see Hayes has almost the same opinion as me, his had a small bit of pink, but not too pink.  I say had because he has already shoved the whole thing down.

I haven't seen him once look towards me.  I was right, he doesn't like me, who am I kidding?  I shouldn't be liking him for that matter.  I just met him and I don't even know his favorite color or anything about him.

That's it, I forbid myself from liking Hayes until it is school and I have spent time with him.

"Hey let's go outside and play football or something." Nash says.

All of the kids follow him outside and we pick teams.

We didn't really need to do much, we just kind of split family and family and we played football.

(POV) Hayes

My plan is not going to work.

She hasn't looked at me once, i'm just going to do this.

"All right boys, and Skylynn I think it's time we go home. Brent, Kadi, Gretchen, you are more than welcome to come over." my mom says.

As everyone leaves, it's perfect timing.

I grab her aside, look up and my mom winks at me. I guess Nash told her.  

"Hey, Kadi" I say. Oh my God i'm really nervous right now.  Shut up! Just think, you're the man!

"Yeah?" she replies.

"I- I was wondering, do you want to be my girlfriend?" I finally get it out.  She's blushing.

"Hayes I, we haven't even gone on a date I-"

"Then let's go on a date.  I can get everyone out of the house, or we could go to a fancy restaurant or-"

"Hayes that's not how it works." she says.

Now I can say it, my heart is broken.

I know i've only known her for a couple hours, but I just... I feel like I can tell her anything. I can hug her and she will fit perfectly in my arms.

I just thought...

she was different.

i'm surprised at my own writing!
