In the beginning of January there is always snow in Riverdale, this year only just more than usually. The air wasn't as cold and somehow bearable as, for example, it was in December.

The broken day was sunny and bright in the sky.

„Shit." Wendy scolded as she swiftly closed the driver's door of the car, dropping behind the steering wheel. The top of her nose was icy red, her hands cold so she was rubbing them constantly together.
„The road is closed. We can't pass. There are two huge fallen trees in front of us. I guess because of the massive snow. We have to turn back but it will take us hours to drive around this area." She turned to her sister who looked at her with wide-eyed eyes, dizzy, before her face, wrapped in pain, furrowed deeply.
„What's going on? " Wendy asked worried.

"My water just broke."

„Please, don't say in my car!" Wendy wrinkled her nose.

„Okay, I'm not saying it." Alice squirmed through her clenched teeth.

„Oh my God,." Wendy waved nervous at the ignition switch as she realized what was happening.
„Hold on, ok? We'll be in the next hospital in less than an hour."

„Wendy!" Alice's voice was filled with panic. „It's too late. The contractions have started and the gaps in between are already alarmingly short. The baby is coming now."

„Why are you so sure that the baby is coming RIGHT now? We probably have enough time to get to the hospital."

„That's ..." Alice moaned in agony, rolling her eyes in disbelief, „.. my third one. We're standing here in the middle of nowhere. Besides us you won't find another soul for the next few miles."

„That's not possible. Contractions don't come out of nowhere just like that. There must have been signs before." The moment she uttered the words, Wendy got an unbelievable suspicion.
„Don't say there were signs!"

Her sister's guilty look was already enough for an positive answer.

„Are you out of your mind, Alice? You were already in labor when we left? Just because of that stupid gift you wanted we are now in this mess? "

„I'm sorry, really. I misjudged the situation. It was just a tiny draw every now and then, nothing exciting."

„God you are so stubborn."

„That's obviously a family habit."

„I'm not ready for the babys arrival yet!" Wendy protested with a whining tone.

„I'm sorry." Alice's lips flashed a touched smile.
„I need you now." She took her sister's hand and continued calmly.
„I know you are afraid. I'm too. But together we can do it. It's just a baby, right?"

Wendy saw the plea in her sister's eyes and nodded determinedly.
„You're right. Watch out. I'll get blankets, water and whatever else you might need out of the trunk and you'll make it here, as far as possible, reasonably comfortable for yourself. Do you think you can get on the back seat? That may be more enjoyable. "

„I guess so."

„Just to be sure I'll call the ambulance and inform FP." The brunette woman spoke as she helped Alice out of the car to sit on the back seat.

„Do that."

Wendy gathered all the stuff she could find to make it for Alice as comfortable as possible and to keep her sister and the baby warm later. For the first time she was really happy that the chaos in the trunk of her car was good for something. Finally she had a solid helpful reason to argue when Tommy would mention the chaos in the trunk next time.

After she finished the phone call with FP Wendy returned to her sister on the back seat. It was a little while since the exciting announcement of the babys upcoming arrival. The contractions came rapidly in shorter intervals. Wendy could see that Alice was trying to hold back her emotions. But the time came when all the dams broke and Alice had to shout out her pain simply liberating.
„Hey, how are you?" She asked a little tense as she noticed Alice's strained face.

„So far so good."

„But?"

„I have to ..." Alice grabbed Wendy's hand and squeezed it painfully, „press from now on."

„FP and Tommy will be with us in about twenty minutes."

Alice shook her head as she straightened her torso and allowed herself with all her energy to endure the on-going labor surge, then, exhausted, to exhale.

„I guessed it." Wendy lovingly stroked some hair off Alice's face before she knelt in front of her in the snow to safely pick up the jostling new born in a few minutes.
„Are you warm enough? Otherwise I'll start the engine for a couple of minutes but not for to long because of the exhaust fumes."

„I'm wrapped up like a mummy." Alice smiled shy through her eager glassy eyes before the next contraction eased in and then overwhelmed Alice with all its might.

„Breathe in and out, remember your breathing exercises. We're through it soon." Wendy tried to motivate her sister before she laughingly touched her knee.
„I can see the head already, Alice, try to relax." At the exact same moment Wendy could hear the sound of an oncoming car from a distance. Then she heard the opening and closing of several car doors and the rapid pounding of running feet through deep snow.

„Alice, babe, I'm here now!" FP appeared in full disarray in front of the two sisters. First he gave Wendy a grateful kiss on the forehead and then he pushed himself next to Alice on the back of the car.
„You're almost done. I love you! "

„Thank goodness." Wendy was happy that Tommy immediately took control of the situation and sighed exhausted. As if in trance she was watching as the head of the new earth citizen continued to emerge and then, after the first shoulder had overcome it's obstacle, the entire little body pressed free.
Tommy had a big smile on his face as he examined the tiny bundle and immediately wrapped it in warm blankets.
FP kissed Alice, overwhelmed and intimate.

And finally the siren of the requested ambulance was coming closer.

Tommy gently placed the newborn in FP's arms who in turn placed the baby between himself and Alice. Alice didn't know what to do with her emotions and tears at the time.
