and i don't care what they say about you baby
they don't know what you've been through

———

David and I sat and talked for at least an hour, mainly about what we did once we got home. I basically could say nothing except for tell him the basics about going home. "Yeah, my dad wants to meet you, by the way. I told him we weren't dating, but he didn't really believe that. Obviously."

"He felt the chemistry," David teased, and I rolled my eyes. "Didn't you say he wanted you to come for dinner twice a month?"

"Yep."

"I could just come to one of those," he shrugged. "I think it'd be cool to meet your dad. Can I film him?"

"I'm not pimping my fucking dad out," I laughed. "You are restricted from filming the first time you meet, even if he asks for it, which I know he will."

"Okay," he nodded in agreement. "My vlog loved you, though. The footage I had, before we sold the camera, they really liked. And they liked when I went back to get the earrings."

"Oh, you did it for the vlog?" I raised my eyebrows, pretending to be offended.

"I did it for you."

We talked for a little longer, and then David got up to get a water bottle from the fridge.

"Don't get too far ahead of yourself, David," I heard Jason half whisper from the kitchen. I could only assume they were talking about me, sitting on the couch a few feet away from them eavesdropping. "I'm warning you now rather than later."

"Can we not do this now?" David rolled his eyes, unscrewing the cap to his water bottle and taking a swig. "She's literally across the room waiting for me to come back."

"She has serious issues she needs to deal with," Jason replied quietly (it didn't matter his volume; I was an expert lip reader. You learn to be while eavesdropping on people at the library). "She's had a bad reputation since she was, what, 10? She's going to look terrible for you. She'll ruin your reputation if it gets out that you're dating."

"It's already out that we're dating," David protested, and I rolled my eyes, unable to stop the smile from growing on my face. We were not dating, not yet at least. "She's not a bad person because she did, literally, one sexual movie..."

"She got addicted to cocaine when she was thirteen, David. It was all over the news," Jason said and I clenched my jaw, taking large gulps of my drink just to calm myself down. "Do you really think that's who you should be associating with?"

"Fuck you," was David's simple reply, twisting the cap back on his water bottle and turning on his heels to head back to the couch. I didn't even try to hide that I had been listening, looking at him with pursed lips and raised eyebrows as he plopped down next to me. "Hi."

"Your friend's a fucking dick," I answered his greeting, no hint of a smile on my face. I knew it wasn't David's fault, but if that was what I had to look forward to during our time together, I didn't know if it was worth it. "Just saying."

"I know," David sighed, wrapping an arm around my shoulder. "He's old. He doesn't get it."

"I mean, he wasn't wrong," I replied with a shrug. "I do have a terrible reputation, especially now that my first few days back in the spotlight I was seen gambling and at a strip club. But still... he shouldn't say it."

"He won't do it again," David assured me, rubbing his hand up and down on my arm. "Promise."

"I'll have to do my research on him," I said, slowly sipping my drink. When David furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, I added, "I can't be the only one with problems."

"Oh, trust me, you'll find a ton of problems with Jason," David laughed, taking a swig of his water. "Do you want to come with me to film some stuff with Zane? He's pretty drunk."

"I actually think I'm going home," I told him, looking down at my phone to see that the time was past ten o'clock, my usual bed time. "I'm sleepy."

"You're not driving," David chuckled, then seriously said, "You're drunk."

"Okay, Dad," I playfully rolled my eyes. "I'm more like tipsy, and I feel fine to drive. It's only ten or fifteen minutes. I'm fine, seriously."

"No, I'm not letting you leave," he said, then snatched my keys off the coffee table, stuffing them into the pocket of his sweatshirt. "You can sleep in my room."

"David," I sighed, rubbing my temples to ease my growing frustration. "I'm not drunk. I bet you I could pass a breathalyzer right now."

"Okay, well, I'm not taking any chances," he stood and offered his hand out to me. I huffed, grabbing it and letting him lead me into his bedroom. He said, "I'll get you a t-shirt to change into... if you want."

"Uh, yeah," I nodded, realizing my itchy sweater would probably be hell to try and sleep in. "Just whatever's fine."

"Okay," David chuckled at my words, digging through his closet until he pulled out a black and teal baseball tea with the word "Trukfit" on it. I didn't understand, and I didn't ask. "This should fit you. It doesn't matter if it's a little big, does it?"

"No, David," I smiled, grabbing it from his hands. "Thank you."

"You're all set, then?" he confirmed, and I nodded. "Okay. Goodnight, Gen."

"Night, David," I grinned.

"If you don't say no in the next five seconds, I'm going to kiss you," he told me, then began his countdown as he stepped closer. "One. Two. Three. Four. Four and a half. Four and three—"

"You're insufferable," I giggled, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him down until his lips met mine. "Now, go back to your friends. They all think sooo badly of me; they probably think I'm snorting cocaine off your dick in here."

"Shut up," David laughed, giving me one last peck on the lips. "They aren't all as stupid as Jason."

"Says you," I sarcastically replied. "The stupidest of them all."

"I could stay in here all night arguing with you, you know?" David raised his eyebrows, as if that scared me. "You make it really easy."

"Don't," I laughed. "And just so you know, I was never addicted to cocaine. Thought I should put that out there."

"I'm not worried about it," David half smiled. "I'll see you in a few hours, if you wake up."

"Okay. Goodnight."

"Night, Evie."
