"Look alive, Dobrik," I teased, tossing my badly straightened blonde hair over my shoulder. We were sitting in the car on our way to my dad's house for dinner. It was exactly a week since the party, and David and I had either talked on the phone or hung out every single day since. We hadn't made anything official, but we both knew. That's why I decided this dinner would be fine; David and I weren't actually dating, but... close enough. "We are T-minus five minutes away from the most important meeting of your life."
"You know, the more you say it, the more nervous I get."
"Oh, I know," I smirked, giggling when I saw David nervously twisting the bottom of his black t-shirt. "Calm down. What's he gonna do? Kill you?"
"Forbid me from ever seeing you again?" David said like it was obvious.
"He doesn't control me," I laughed at the thought. "And we're not twelve. No one can forbid me from seeing anyone. Even if he hates you, I don't."
"Oh, I know you don't," David cockily smiled at me. "You can't seem to keep your hands to yourself."
"Shut the fuck up," I rolled my eyes. "You're the one always touching me and kissing me. I never initiate anything."
"If that's what you have to believe to make yourself feel better, then I'll let you believe it," he laughed, but he wasn't laughing long as we pulled into the gated driveway. "Holy fucking shit."
"And you think you're rich," I joked, quickly typing in the code and giggling at David's face as the huge iron gates opened, revealing more of the mansion. "Are you ready, Dobrik?"
"Don't call me Dobrik in front of your dad," he scolded me. "He's gonna think I'm a pussy."
"Well, if the shoe fits..."
"Shut up," David rolled his eyes, climbing out of my car once it was parked next to Lucia's Mercedes that was, for a reason unknown to me, not in the eight car garage. "Holy fuck, I'm nervous."
"Everything's going to be fine," I reassured him, wrapping my arm around one of his to pull him closer. I leaned my head against his shoulder and said, "Just be normal. You're a very charming person, you know. Everyone loves you."
I led David up the front steps and knocked on the door, waiting for a while until it swung open, revealing Nick in a white t-shirt and jeans. He, charmingly, greeted us, "'Sup, cunt?"
"Not much, douchebag," I pushed past him with my shoulder, making sure he felt it. "This is David. Be nice."
"David, nice to meet you. Love your videos, man," they did a little bro hug, and I hung my jacket on the coatrack. "I'm Nick."
"Nice to meet you, too," David replied, awkwardly laughing. "Genevieve's your sister?"
"Step," Nick and I both corrected at the same time, looking at each other with disgusted faces. "Anyway, dinner's ready. Jose has been cooking all fucking day long."
"I thought you said Jose got fired," I commented, grabbing David's hand and dragging him to follow us.
"Yeah, but our new cook sucked, so Richard hired him again."
"Classic Richard," I responded absentmindedly, glancing back at David to make sure he was still with me. We entered the large, open dining room to see the wooden table filled with different kinds of meats, pastas, salads, and breads. It was unbelievable, and I wondered if they ate like this every night.
"Genevieve!" Lucia grinned, wrapping her skinny, talon-like hands around my elbow and pulling me in for a hug. "I'm so glad you could make it. Who's your friend?"
"This is David," I pulled back from her hug as quickly as humanly possible and gestured to David, who was standing awkwardly with his hands interlocked in front of him. He stuck out his hand for her to shake. "David Dobrik."
"And is this your boyfriend?" she asked, thin eyebrows raised.
"No."
"Oh," she seemed a little disjointed at that, probably wondering why I brought David, my not-boyfriend, when my dad had already told her I was bringing my boyfriend. "Well, your father will be down in just a minute. You two can sit right here."
She gestured for us to sit at the table, and we did. David and I sat on one side, and Lucia and Nick sat on the other. My dad would sit at the head of the table. I asked, out of pure curiosity, "Are the cameras here?"
"No," Nick answered. "Your bitch ass said you didn't want them."
"Language, Nicolas," Lucia frowned. "We're at the table."
"I'm eighteen, Mom," he groaned, looking at me and twirling his finger next to his head in a this bitch is crazy movement. "I—"
He was interrupted by the sound of my father's footsteps coming down the stairs. I looked to the staircase and saw him, in all his glory, smiling at me. "Evie! I'm so glad you decided to come over."
Decided. As if he hadn't practically blackmailed me into coming. I didn't say anything though, instead smiling and replying, "Yep! Brought David, too."
"David, it's nice to meet you," David stood to greet my father, and they firmly shook hands. I almost laughed at the look of utter fear on his face, but decided against it. I didn't want to make him more worried than he already was. "I've seen a lot about you on the internet these days."
"Oh, really?" David asked a little hesitantly. "Good things, I hope."
"Let's eat," Richard said as he sat down at the table, and immediately Nick started digging in. I got mine and David's food, since I could tell he was a bit hesitant to make any sudden movements. "I've seen a few of your videos. You and your friends have a tendency to be a little inappropriate. You'll fit in nicely with my delinquent daughter."
I grabbed my wine glass and began chugging, realizing I'd never get through this lunch without it. "Your daughter's actually one of the most boring people I've ever met—no offense, Evie. She goes to work and then goes home. She only ever hangs out with me if I go to her house. And I assure you my friends and I are not as crazy as we appear; we have to be a little exaggerated for the vlog. We'd obviously never make Gen do anything she didn't want to do, and I'd never hurt her."
"Intentionally," he mumbled under his breath, and I rolled my eyes.
"Sorry, he's usually not such an asshole," I told David openly, unable to contain my smile at Lucia's shocked face. My dad wasn't offended, instead laughing.
"You've never brought home a boyfriend before, Genny. Your old man's just looking out for you."
"He's not my boyfriend," I laughed, eyeing David who was blushing deeper and deeper red the longer Richard stared at him. "We're friends."
"Right," Nick nodded sarcastically, and I kicked him with my boot under the table, only giggling as he winced away in pain.
"David," Richard gained David's attention once again. "Is it true that you didn't plan the road trip with my daughter?"
"Uh, no, sir," David awkwardly nodded. "It just happened."
"Would you ever want it to happen again?"
"Oh, yeah," David nodded, like it was the easiest question in the world. "I'd follow her anywhere."
