The ride was long and tiring. Mikey so desperately wanted to close his eyes and never wake up. His entire body burned. He was sweating as the hot sun beat down on them. The only thing keeping him awake was the fact that his brother probably missed him a whole lot. He wasn't going to let Gerard see him dead. Although, he had no idea if he even had the strength to make it.
"How're you feeling?" Lynz asked after what felt like an hour of just driving in complete silence.
"Tired," Mikey managed to mumble.
Lynz sighed, "We're almost there."
Mikey looked down, his hands looking distorted in his lap. Still, he could make out the darkened scars on his hands from that stupid fence.
"Am I dying?" Mikey asked, finding himself unable to think straight.
"I hope not, but I think so," Lynz said, not looking away from the desert. "But don't lose hope. It's 2019, we've got medicine."
Mikey nodded with unease. He could see right through Lynz. She's just trying to keep him calm, but he couldn't freak out even if he wanted to. He had no energy for that.
"I feel sick," Mikey said with a soft cough.
"Well you just got your intestines burnt. You'll be good," Lynz said, mumbling a small "I hope" Without knowing Mikey heard.
The two finally arrived at the small diner in the middle of nowhere. Mikey saw his friends Frank and Ray talking. Frank had a cigarette in his hand as they talked. Mikey felt himself get pulled out the the car, the sound of the door slamming catching the two's attentions.
"Oh my gosh, you found him!" Frank grinned, "Poison's gonna be so happy!"
"Not quite yet," Lynz said, holding tightly onto Mikey's wrist as he gently swayed, trying to keep his balance, "He got shot."
Both the rebels' eyes widened. Ray ran to the wounded man.
"Where?"
"Right side and left arm and shoulder," Lynz said, "I found him practically dead."
Ray looked straight into Mikey's eyes. Mikey had no idea what Ray had seen, but it made him frown and give him a hug.
"You're okay now, let's take you inside," Ray said, leading Mikey and Lynz inside.
They sat him down in a booth as they talked out of Mikey's listening range. He looked out the window. Happiness, where'd it go? Just a few hours ago he felt it, or maybe he confused it with something else. Now he felt a sense of negative nostalgia. Usually nostalgia makes you happy and amazed at the past, but he didn't like it. He likes how he gets to be with his brother and their friends, but he lost one of the best friends he's ever had. He'll never see him again. After this, he's probably never allowed out into the city ever again.
He wanted to be back. He wished he could've just taken Pete with him. He didn't have to leave him behind. Maybe he could've fought to take him if he just thought a coherent thought for one moment at the time. But his brain was thrown into panic mode and all it thought was run and never look back.
"Hey," Frank said, "Apparently this is a no joking matter because apparently I'm not "professional" enough to talk to them."
"Professional? None of us are even twenty yet," Mikey said.
Frank smiled, "Exactly!"
Mikey looked down at the table, looking down at the ketchup stain resting on it peacefully. Frank cleared his throat. He has this thing where he always has to say something.
"So, sent right back from where you came from, must've sucked," Frank said.
Mikey nodded, feeling his head hurt even more and quickly stopped.
"It did. I saw my old bully, I always got stares, and everyone was on the pills and it was so weird talking to them."
"I bet," Frank commented, "When we first met you and Gee and you guys were still high off the drugs, it was so weird talking to you guys. You always rambled on about the randomest things. But once you guys woke up the next morning, we actually got to know you."
"Yeah," Mikey mumbled. "I - uh - talked to a drac there."
"Ew," Frank cringed.
Mikey quickly stopped there, afraid to go on, "Yeah."
"How did that go?"
"Bad," Mikey lied. He hated to lie, but he also didn't want a lecture about why to stay away from dracs. "Where's Gee?"
"Sleeping," Frank said, "I hope he gets better, I'm worried."
"Is he getting worse?"
"He's sleeping more," Frank replied, "But he's been stressed. He did lose his little brother for almost a month. I'm sure once he sees you he'll start feeling better."
"Good," Mikey said.
"Mikey!" Ray called.
Mikey and Frank looked up at Ray and Lynz. The two headed over to the two youngest members of the group.
"Let me see how bad it is."
Frank got up and let Mikey slide out of the booth, untying Lynz's jacket and pulling his shirt up.
"That's practically fatal," Ray commented.
Mikey wanted to freak out, and he was. He was panicking, but he just couldn't show it. He just kept a straight face as he looked down at his practically-fatal wound.
"But it did miss the major arteries, but obviously it hit his intestines," Ray said, flicking a small flashlight on.
Mikey coughed lightly.
"Atleast the bleeding stopped," Lynz said, "He was bleeding like a fountain when I found him. I thought he would bleed to death before we made it."
The two stared into the hole in Mikey's side for a small bit longer before both getting up.
"We may have to do a small operation on you," Ray said.
"But neither of you are doctors," Mikey mumbled.
"Either that or die."
"I'm going to die either way!" Mikey said, his emotions and thoughts finally catching up to the situation, "So is it just a lose lose situation?"
Ray and Lynz stayed silent.
"Where's Gee?" Mikey asked.
"In the bedroom," Frank said, "Why?"
Mikey didn't answer. He started feeling feelings again. He hated it. Anger, sadness, and fear all mixed together. It hurt to walk as pain started registering to him again. Everything hurt. His side, his arm, his twisted ankle, his heart, everything.
He entered the bedroom, seeing the redhead spread out on their shared section of the room. He slammed the door, startling his brother awake.
"Frank, get out!" Gerard groaned, not even lifting his head.
Mikey had no idea what to say. He had too much to say, actually. So he stayed silent, leaning against the door. And, in the softest voice he's ever spoken in, he whispered his brother's name. Just as he thought, his brother heard. He lifted his head, looking right at Mikey. A glint of joy appeared in his brother's eyes before being replaced with worry.
"Mikey! What happened to you?" He stood up quickly, running over across to his brother.
Mikey was about to speak, opening his mouth to say the whole story. Except the whole story flooded into his head too quickly. From the second he shot that robot to when he left his best friend. It felt like he got hit by a train of emotions. He let out a quiet whine before crying.
