His brother stared helplessly before pulling Mikey into a warm hug, "I'm so sorry. What happened? I've been so scared, I thought I lost you, Mikey."
Mikey didn't say anything. He couldn't say anything. He felt too many things at once. He couldn't comprehend any of it. He felt bombarded with sadness and neverending fear. He couldn't process anything. He felt traumatized, he felt dead before taking his last breath.
"I-I'm dying, Gee," He finally managed to sputter.
" What?" Gerard pulled them apart, his eyes popping out of his head.
"I got shot," He cried, "I'm going to die, but-but I don't want to--"
"Shh Mikey, calm down."
"How!? I nearly died twice already. I almost fell asleep, Gee. And - oh my gosh - everything hurts! It hurts to breath, to cry, to even walk! I can't do anything!"
Gerard hugged him again. Mikey kept crying, realization hitting him. He really is going to die.
"Come here, Mikey," Gerard whispered, gently leading his brother to their bed.
"Wh-What are you..." Mikey didn't understand. Is his brother seriously offering for him to sleep when there is a high chance he could fall asleep and never wake up?
"Just lay down," Gerard said, laying down.
Mikey was confused, but followed along anyway. Gerard pulled him closer to him and covered them with a soft cotton blanket. Mikey felt a sense of calmness despite wanting to scream and pull all his hair out.
"What happened?" Gerard whispered to him.
Mikey was still distraught, he whimpered for an answer. Gerard waited patiently.
"I-I-" Mikey took a deep breath, "They ganged up on me. All the dracs. All those people we grew up with, they ganged up on me. They were about to shoot me dead."
"Where were you?" Gerard asked gently and calmly.
"The-The Care Unit," Mikey replied.
Gerard exhaled slowly, Mikey felt a little tickle on the back of his neck, "I almost died. I closed my eyes and-and imagined what heaven would look like before Lynz found me."
"I'm so sorry this happened," Gerard said, "I feel terrible."
"Why? It was my fault," Mikey said, "I shot a bot. They knew who I was. They gave me bad pills."
"But none of us knew that," Gerard replied, "You were all alone. Anything could've happened to you."
Mikey sighed, "How're you feeling?"
"Better knowing you're alive."
Just what Frank thought. Mikey stared blankly ahead, seeing their broken radio and old boots and ripped jeans laying on the ground.
"I missed you," Mikey said.
Gerard stopped answering. Mikey assumed he fell asleep. Mikey brought the blanket up to his chin, still staring. He missed this. Still, he missed his best friend.
It was weird. He wanted to be back in this exact spot ever since he left, but now that he is back he just couldn't enjoy it. All he could think about was his old drac friend. He had such a good time with him. The two always made eachother laugh, Pete always told the best jokes. He wished he could listen to him ramble about whatever it was that he happened to be thinking about at this moment. He missed home, but he missed his home away from home.
Home away from home. What a good way to describe him. What Mikey considered home changed plenty while he was gone. He thought home was where your family was, where you always were. He thought of it as where all the love was. And as true as all those things are, Mikey missed an important part of home; happiness.
He didn't know whether he actually experienced happiness or what exactly he felt over there. He only knew so many emotions and what he felt with his old roommate was not one of them. It was such a foreign feeling, but a nice one. He missed it. Although the last time he felt it wasn't long ago, he missed it. His craving for it was high. It was like an addiction. He was addicted to the way he felt with Pete. He enjoyed not caring and just having fun. If that was happiness, where you laugh at everything the other says and feel like you can do anything with them on your side, then sign Mikey up because he wanted that back so badly.
He didn't exactly know when he fell asleep considering he was trying so hard to stay awake, but he just remembered blinking but instead of opening his eyes to the same thing, he opened his eyes to a darker setting. The sun must have went down. How sad, Mikey missed the sunset. However, he did hear people talking above him.
"Gerard, you're such an idiot," He heard Frank said.
He heard a soft cough come from his brother, "He was tired and in pain, what else could I do?"
"How about get him help?" Frank asked. "What if he died!?"
"It was a fifty-fifty chance," Gerard said, "And he was sad and scared. I let him sleep because he could barely think straight, everything he said was all over the place! I thought if I just let him sleep and he died, he died peacefully with some type of calmness."
"But he's your brother, why just let him die?"
"Because he was suffering, Frank," Gerard said, "He came in here with tears in his eyes, and I've seen him cry our entire lives but this one wasn't normal sadness or fear, he was traumatized. And he knew he was dying and still fell asleep."
Mikey sat up, his head still throbbing. Both boys looked over at him.
"And look, he survived," Gerard said.
Mikey coughed up blood, his heart beating quickly. He didn't die yet, but he was guessing that he was dying now.
"Come on, Mikey. You're going to live, I promise," Gerard said gently, grabbing Mikey's hand softly and slowly standing him up.
Mikey still could barely think. The room spun around him as he took a few steps, his ankle shooting pain all around the bone. He didn't speak, he had no idea what to say. What do you say in a situation like this? So instead he followed his brother and Frank out of the bedroom. Ray and Lynz sat in a booth.
"We drove by the city and got supplies," Lynz said, sipping on her soda, "I think we can fix him. But he might die if we do."
"I might die no matter what," Mikey said, finally regaining his voice. It came out hoarse and quiet, but everyone heard loud and clear. He really didn't care at this point. He just wanted out of all this mess. What did he do to deserve all this? Okay, maybe alot of things, but he didn't want to this of that. It really was odd to him, how quickly his life took a turn. One moment he was mercilessly killing dracs just to survive, and the next he is likely to die no matter what he did. It seemed like he always got the short end of the stick, and it annoyed him.
"Just do it," He said. What does he have left to lose? He's already lost so much, what worse is losing your life?
