Beams of light shined through her window as Billie slowly opened her slightly heavy eyelids. Stretching limb by limb she moved her covers past her torso and legs and placed her feet onto the cold wooden floorboards of her bedroom.
Billie was an early riser, always had been. Something about not wanting to miss out on the day ahead had always pushed her to rise with the sun. She walked on her creaking floor over to her desk, placed at her bedroom window covered with plants and lights. Putting a record onto the turntable and swaying to the beat of the gentle music.
Walking out into the kitchen she made her regular cup of coffee and picked up her book that she left at the counter, starting to read where she left off. Of course, it was a romance novel it was practically the only thing she read. Much to her mother's disappointment. She glanced at the clock and noticed it was time to head down to her work down at a little old run down cafe. She was saving up to visit her grandparents. She walked down the usual path she took every weekend and arrived through the whiney door. Taking her apron from the hook she tied a loop and a knot behind her back.
Walking to the counter she smiled politely at the customer who had been waiting for their order to be taken. "Good morning, what would you like to have this morning?" she said softly not remaining eye contact with the person in front of her. A shy soul she was.
" A hot chocolate would be great thanks," said a boy who seemed to be around her age said.
"Alrighty, one hot chocolate coming up. That will be $4.50"
The two had exchanged money and she lingered her gaze on the dark brown head of hair.
Two hours had passed, and she was now delivering the customers their food and drinks. A cappuccino was in her hand as she looked for the number 42. Over in the corner a teen with his head stuck in a book matched with a pair of glasses was sitting at the table she had to serve. "Here you go," she said leaning down placing the cup onto the table.
The teen had looked up from his book and looked directly into her eyes. Something she wasn't used to, too often. "Thank you" he said with a smile. Almost seeming to be studying her. Smiling back at him she turned away and headed back into the kitchen to serve another order.
The hand of the clock had struck 5 o'clock and Billie was hanging her apron back up onto the hook. Brushing down her clothes and pushed the back door open and breathed in the cool fresh air. Walking down the pathway back to her house that still didn't feel like home.
