It's starting to getting colder. The leaves have turned colors and they remind me of the times we used to hang out in the backyard, telling stories and roasting marshmallows while the littler kids played with the dogs. Every time we pass by the willow tree at the park, I remember how you used to hold my hand and swing our arms back and forth like we were the happiest people in the world.

I wish you were still here. Still waiting outside for me when I took too long to get ready for a fall fair. I wish you were still the one always ready to take my hand when I was nervous about getting on a horse or sitting on a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch. Autumn is different without you. I still don't want to call it "fall." It's weird knowing the last time we were together...

Anyway, I miss you.

The leaves have left the trees just as you left me. I still can't bear the idea of not having you around for the winter season. We can't watch Christmas movies together or sing along to Christmas songs in the car. We can't go ice skating. Or rather you can't go ice skating while pushing me around on a sleigh or helping me stand up on the ice anymore. You're not here to hang Christmas ornaments on the tree especially at the parts that I can't reach. You're not here to exchange gifts and share the story of the birth of Jesus. You're not here to wrap me in warm hugs as each night grows colder. You're not here.

This is the last kind letter I'll write like this. I know you won't receive them. But I miss you.

I'm letting go. Each season passes and each brings joy and pain. I will not carry the pain and regret and emptiness of last year with me in this new one. You wouldn't want me to. I'm done yearning for you to be here and imagining what could've been. I'll treasure our memories and forever keep you in my heart. But I still miss you. I still wish you could see how fast I've grown, how much I've learned and how much I look like you now. Daddy, I will make sure this new year is a brand new start for us. We will thrive and live the lives you wanted us to knowing you're watching from above.

Here's the first of the kind of letters where I will no longer wish and reminisce sad memories but update you and tell you of what I feel. You won't get this in Heaven. But I know you're watching.

I miss you and I love you daddy. Here's my first 2021 love letter to you.
