The District
As you waited for more information on the deviant android, you stood next to Connor. His LED flashed between yellow and blue for a few moments before settling on swirling yellow. It was like that for at least three minutes. Once again, you wondered what he was thinking about. Maybe he was thinking about life? Processing information? Maybe he was just intensely studying what he saw in the store window in front of you two? You honestly had no idea.
"Hey Connor?" You decide to ask him.
"Yes, Detective (Y/n)?"
"What were you thinking about? You were just staring into space thinking for a long time."
"I was just reviewing current evidence. The deviant took the first bus that came along, and it stayed until the end of the line. Maybe it didn't go far?" He finishes and looks around the area.
You notice that his eyes finally settled on an abandoned house on the other side of the intersection. His LED flashed yellow. Your gaze followed his.
"Do you want to check out that house?" You ask.
The android nods and you walk over to Hank to tell him of your findings.
"Hank, Connor wants to check out the abandoned building across the street. He might sense something that we don't."
Hank looks over at the other two cops standing beside him and shrugs with a smirk. "Why not? It's worth a shot," He says.
You don't know what happened to Hank in the past few hours for him to finally lighten up on Connor, but you were happy for him. Maybe he just needed some fresh air and some busy work. He's always either cramped up in his little office space or his house.
The four of you start walking back towards Connor, who has already made a head start on investigating the house. You make an effort to hurry over to him before he makes any sudden, irrational decisions. Thankfully, he was only examining the fence by the time you all got there.
"Do you see anything Connor?" You ask him.
He crouches down to an opening in the fence and lifts it slightly, tilting his head as he examines it fully. "There's some thirium on the fence. I know another android was here," He says as he crawls through the hole.
You examine your surroundings and happen to notice a pair of wire cutters on the ground near the opening. "Figures," You thought. Your eyes meet with Connor's through the fence, and he lifts up the wiring so that you can crawl through as well. You smile at him before crouching down and entering in after him.
"So you think the deviant is here?" You ask. The android nods as his eyes scan the area. He rubs his hands together as he makes his way to the front door. You notice something shift in the corner of your vision, and you stop to peer through a small crack in between some boards. A window was just past them, and you could make out the figure of a male android standing in the center of the room. He wasn't facing the window.
"There's an android in the house," You tell Connor. He didn't seem to pay attention to your comment, although you were pretty sure he heard you. He slowly opened the front door to the house and stepped inside. You could hear him making conversation with the other android inside the house, but you weren't really paying attention. As you stepped inside, a foul smell violated your nostrils and you did your best to mask the smell with your shirt sleeve.
"Jesus, what is that smell?" You muttered to yourself, briefly examining all that you could see in front of you.
You noticed a fireplace running at the far end of the house, and a dinner table set up in front of it. You weren't known to be a religious person, but you hoped and prayed that the large, dead rat that lie on the table was the source of the putrid scent that filled the house. However, you doubted that that was the case. You continued to drown out Connor and the other android's conversation all together, putting all of your focus on finding the deviant android. You steadily made your way up a few steps on the staircase, trying to see if there was anything worth checking out.
"Is there anyone upstairs?" You called out to the twitchy android. His eyes scattered all about the room as he rocked back and forth on his heels. You could tell he was nervous.
"No," The android replied, and you watched as Connor examined him for any signs of deceit.
"He's telling the truth, (Y/n)," Connor reported.
You glance up the stairs one last time before making your way back down to the main floor, and walk towards the dusty, old arcade machine. You had a sudden feeling of nostalgia as you stared at the rickety machine, your mind flashing back to a time you and your mom played games together at a retro arcade. You used to be really good at Pac-Man, you remembered, and your mom always used to encourage you to keep trying every time you got eaten.
You smiled at the memory, briefly, before your mind snapped you back to the investigation at hand. Right in the corner of your right eye, you swore you saw movement from underneath the staircase. At first you thought you might have been seeing things, but that was disproven after your pair of (e/c) eyes met with a pair of blue ones followed by another pair of frightened, brown ones. You looked over your shoulder at Connor and the twitchy, blonde android. Connor was peering into another room adjacent to the main room, but the blonde android seemed more nervous than ever as he stared right at you. He knew something.
You looked back at the space underneath the staircase as both pairs of eyes continued to study you in fear. You walked towards the space slowly, but were soon stopped by a pair of arms hooking underneath your armpits, straddling you and pulling you back from the staircase.
"Run Kara! Run as fast as you can!" The android holding you shouted. You were flailing against his grip, struggling to free yourself. You watched as both a female android with short, black hair and a little girl hurriedly crawled out from underneath the stairs and ran through the front door.
"Connor! Chase them!" You shouted at Connor, who was already on their trail. Now all you needed to do was free yourself.
You swung your left foot back and kicked the blonde android in the shin, hoping the blunt force would be enough for him to loosen his grip on you. Luckily for you, your plan worked, and you were able to pull one arm free and elbow the android in the stomach. You pulled your other arm away as he recoiled, and dashed out the door just in time to see Connor running after the two girls down the sidewalk past the house. You had no time to waste. You had to follow after him.
