He's A Machine
You managed to jump over the fence just in time. The twitchy, blonde android had caught up to you and tried to take a swing at you with his knife. Luckily, the only damage he caused was a small gash on your right calf, and that wasn't enough to slow you down.
You ran as fast as you could after Connor and the deviant android, accidentally pushing past a few poor bystanders and other officers as you continued the chase. As you ran, you wondered how the hell Connor had the energy to run after them this fast for this long. You were already exhausted, but you kept going.
"Over there!" An officer called out to you, pointing down a nearby alleyway. You turned and ran down the soaking wet alleyway after Connor and the two girls, seeing that Connor was already at the fence at the end, looking straight at the black-haired android. You pulled out your gun as you neared them, pointing it at the female android.
"Don't shoot! We need it alive!" Connor exclaimed, holding out his hand to stop you. You lowered your gun, and the two girls took the opportunity to slide down the muddy slope towards the highway. Hank finally caught up to you two, panting out of breath as he watched through the fence.
"Fuck, that's crazy," He panted. "They'll never make it to the other side." You watched as the two girls walked over the outer barrier of the highway, both of them desperate to make it across. You flinched as they started to run past cars and swerve through lanes of blistering fast traffic.
"I can't let them get away!" Connor shouted, jumping up onto the fence. Hank immediately pulled him back down.
"Hey! You will get yourself killed! Don't go after them Connor, that's an order!" Hank yelled. Connor didn't listen to him however, and he hurled himself over the top of the fence. You panicked as you watched him slide down the slippery slope and climb over the barrier.
"Connor!" You yelled, jumping over the fence after him. You could hear Hank screaming at you, but you didn't care. In that moment, the only person you cared about was Connor.
"Goddammit Connor," You thought to yourself as you climbed over the highway barrier, getting nipped by the fast winds of the cars that sped past you. You knew you had to take caution, but Connor's life was on the line. This moment didn't matter. You had to get him back, no matter the consequences.
You managed to evade most of the cars by quickly slipping in between lanes, gasping for air as you reached the center. Connor was in a struggle with the black-haired android in the middle of the highway, and you immediately started stressing as you saw a car hurdling towards the both of them at full speed down the street. You had to act fast.
"Connor!" You screamed, racing towards him. The female android had managed to get away from his grip and pushed him backwards, sending him farther into the street. The car was getting dangerously close to him. You made it just in the nick of time, and ran out into the street where Connor was standing, and grabbed his arm. You forcefully pulled him towards you, quickly dragging him back to the median. The fast wind of the car that had threatened to hit Connor had sped by, and you tripped backwards as you finally ran out of the energy to keep dragging him. You grunted as he fell on top of you.
"(Y/n)! Why did you run out after me? You could have gotten yourself killed!" He shouted, getting up and straightening his clothes back out.
"Look who's talking!" You shouted back, your lungs still grasping for air. The adrenaline was starting to wear off, and that cut that you received earlier was starting to sting a bit. You breathed in sharply as you touched it.
Connor only looked at you. You didn't know if he wanted to say anything, or if he just couldn't. The two of you just stood there in utter silence, the sharp sound of air whirring by being the only noise that filled the atmosphere.
"I'm sorry," You finally grunted. "Let's just get back to Hank. I'm sure he's wondering what the hell we're doing still sitting out here." You started to make your way towards the highway bridge that was a few yards away, but you were stopped by Connor's tight grip on your wrist.
"You didn't have to risk your life for me, (Y/n). You could've gotten extremely injured. You shouldn't have to worry about me like that. I'm just a machine. I'm replaceable, and you're not. Don't risk your life for me like that ever again."
Your heart broke at his words for two reasons. The first reason being that he sounded like he was scolding you, like a mother to their child after doing something they weren't supposed to. You didn't like his tone at all, and it made you feel extremely guilty. The second was that he had called himself "just a machine," and "replaceable." Little did he know, though, that you thought of him anything but "replaceable." It was hard for you to admit it, but you didn't think of him as just a machine filled with programs and numbers. To you, he was more than that. Your partner, your friend, your...your...
"Screw your head on straight, (Y/n)," You thought to yourself. "He can't ever possibly love you back. It's not in his programming. His programming will never allow him to love you."
--Back at the Station--
You sat in the coffee lounge with your head in your hands, a cup of lukewarm coffee sitting in front of you. You didn't know what to do, think, or say anymore. You never would've thought that in the time span of a couple hours, you would feel this conflicted.
"You love him, that's why you care so much for him," You thought. "You love him. You love him."
You started to feel anger, and then regret, and then guilt. "I'm sorry, Connor," You quietly mumbled to yourself, feeling your eyes swell up with tears. His words still bit at you like ice. You knew that he wasn't trying to come off as mean or scolding, but to you, all of his words mattered. You held onto them like secrets. They meant everything to you, but meant nothing to him. It was only in his programming to tell you what he told you earlier. You wished that he could see himself in a different light.
