She didn't remember falling asleep, so of course she was surprised to wake up in a totally different room.Romelle made sure not to jump to any conclusions, knowing full well that the door was wide open for her escape and she was not strapped down in any way. She stood slowly, rubbing at her eyes and stretching her muscles loose.
An unfamiliar scent wafted through the air. It invaded her sense and made her feet move forward, dragging her out to the place she had once stood alone.
Gayle was ready this time, glancing over to Romelle as she shuffled into the kitchen with heavy legs. She grunted passively, but did not verbally greet the other woman. Romelle on the other hand, was happy to do such.
"Good morning, Gayle. What is that smell?"
"Toast and eggs," she responded blankly, picking up a spatula and shoveling a sunny side up egg onto a paper plate. "Do you like anything on your toast?"
"Uh, sugar and cinnamon." She paused as the human began slathering butter onto a crisp piece of bread, hands crossed politely. "But... you don't have to feed me. I should get going, my friends must be worried and I don't have my phone on me. Or, at least I hope they're worried."
"I'm walking you to the bus stop," Gayle interrupted, finishing Romelle's platter without any halts. "A last precaution."
"Oh... alright." Romelle found herself not arguing, instead taking the extended breakfast and sitting down at the small wooden table a room over. Gayle joined her a few minutes later with two cups of water and her own food.
They were both quiet for a few minutes, the taller girl only getting up once in order to get the shorter one another slice of toast. For once it was Gayle who shattered the tense atmosphere, initiating the conversation with a simple question.
"Do you know at all who was following you?"
Romelle blinked, before shaking her head. "No. I just... kept moving along."
"As you should. I'm just surprised that it happened in the first place." The brown-eyed girl wiped up the last of her egg yolk, putting the soggy bread in her mouth with a sigh.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, the number of sexual assaults, rapes, murders, and otherwise have been down for decades. The world was getting better, then this whole mess with these aliens happened."
"That's quiznacking rude," Romelle huffed with a sharp glare, catching Gayle off guard. "We Alteans are not the cause of murders."
She sighed deeply, putting her cheek into her hand. "Sorry, that's not what I meant. I'm just saying, ever since the Galra invaded and the Altean colony merged with our society, crimes like that have spiked. My guess is it's because freaks like the one who followed you are willing to get caught for someone a little more out of the box."
The otherworldly being frowned, her face paling as she pushed away the crumbs of her breakfast. She let her hands fall to her lap, her blonde pigtails falling with it.
Gayle stared at her for a moment, able to feel the overwhelming defeat, before she tapped on the table. Romelle looked up to find the woman with a reassuring smile, her eyes suddenly warm and welcoming.
"But don't worry about it. I have an idea."
