Gayle and Romelle walked side by side down the sidewalk, the latter glancing a few times to the former's attire. The brown-skinned girl wore a plain pink crop top, seemingly having a knack for keeping her stomach exposed.
She sipped on a protein shake casually, listening to the conversation beside her.
"Yes, Krolia, for the fifth time– I promise I am fine." Romelle paused, Gayle listening to the barely audible squeaks that came from the cellphone. "I will be home in less than an hour. I love you as well." The Altean hung up with an exasperated sigh, but could not push down the warm feeling brought forth from knowing that the Galran mother had been worried sick. "Here's your phone back."
Gayle quickly shoved it in her pocket, stopping as they came upon the small glass structure where a bus would stop by any minute. "You sure you have money for a ticket?"
"Yes, I counted before we left," Romelle confirmed. The two woman went silent (yet again), the taller one taking another sip from her drink as a bystander sneezed from seasonal allergies. Gayle tapped her foot impatiently, before speaking up.
"Can I have your number? Becau—"
"Of course!" Romelle shouted, a bit too loud and a bit too quick. She blushed immediately, her fists unclenching in embarrassment. It didn't phase Gayle any, but instead she smiled slightly and held out a Sharpie.
"I'll let you know any updates," she informed as Romelle scribbled her phone number on her hand. "Bus is here."
Sure enough, the screeching of tires sounded from behind them. "Thank you," Romelle nodded. She dropped Gayle's hand with hesitation but in the end walked away, eager to be back with her family.
The two exchanged a final goodbye wave from opposite sides of the glass, and then they were out of sight.
