Chapter 5: Little Talks

Soon after she left, Nurse Jackson came back into my room and took my blood test just as planned. All went well and I thank her for the millionth time for being a good nurse and getting the needle in the vein on the first or second try. I swear every other nurse is like the devil incarnated when it comes to taking blood. They stab you with that damn needle so many times and still can't get it right...

After that, she says I'm free to stuff my face with any food I want now and leaves the room, promising to be back in an hour or 2 for the next couple of tests.

With that, I lay down on my bed and snuggle deep in my blankets just to be disturbed by my door opening again.

"Sister!!!" Lexi yells to me and I turn towards her, not bothering to lift my head off the pillow.

"Hey." I greet her as I open my eyes and sigh. She closes the door, puts her stuff down, and walks toward my bed. Alexis Lee Baker is a 5'5 blonde with bold green eyes and freckles dotting most of her pale cheeks. She barely looks like me since I have bright blue eyes, dirty blond (almost a light brown) hair, and I'm not pale. I'm not exactly tan either but I do have a hint of color to my skin. of course if you put us next to each other, you could tell we are related but there's always those slight differences that make us look mostly different.

"Hmm that's new." She says while looking around my room and pointing to a collage of pictures above my bed.

"Yeah... you're in it if you look closely. So is Cara and mom and dad and the rest of the family." Cara is our other sister (She's 34). She's currently living on the other side of Florida, opposite of the little beach town that Lexi, Mom, and I live in. Though, she always visits since she used to live here too. But 2 years after she had her second kid, she decided they needed a bigger home so she packed up and moved to a more country style town. She has 2 kids that I'm also pretty close with. Athena and Jake. Athena is 9 and she's pretty much just a mini me. She's my only niece, so we have an extra bond, one that Rylan and Jake just can't have with me. Jake is 4 and he's just a cute little boy with a love of animals. He could care less about me though, he has his sister, cousin, and pets to think about...

Lexi continues to gaze around the room and I follow. My room is a pretty decent size for a hospital room, plus I don't have to share it so that's always nice. The walls are a light blue with white accents that make the room pretty bright so I don't usually have the regular lights on, just some fairy lights that I hung around the room. With those, the room has a faint glow and doesn't hurt my eyes as much as the regular ones do.

I continue to look around, and my eyes land on the curtains that block the big window on the west side of my room. I look at the clock above the TV in front of my bed. 5:37pm. The sun sets in 2 hours.

I have to say, the best part of my room is the window. Well not exactly the window but you know what I mean. The view from my window. The sunsets are amazing.

After gazing at my curtain-covered window, I look to the right of it and spot my Polaroid picture collection. On the wall next to my window I tape a new picture of the sunset every night that I can take one. It's become quite the collection and I'm pretty proud of it.

"So what's up with you, Eve?" Lexi asks me. Eve is my middle name, gifted to me as a tribute to my great aunt Everleigh but I won't go into great detail about her, although she was pretty great.

"Not much honestly. Are you hungry?" I ask as my stomach makes noises. I haven't eaten at all today and it's really starting to show.

"No but if you are, go get some food." I look at her and question if she's sure.

"Yes I'm sure, now go." She states.

"Ok your loss." I say as I grab my wallet out of my bag and head out of the room.

On my way to the cafeteria, I wave to the nurses in the ICU department as always and stop at a vending machine to buy some chips. I really love cheddar ruffles...

"Lyla!" I hear my name being called and I turn towards the end of the ICU hallway that I just walked past.

"Oh hey Ally." I say as I walk towards her. Ally is a friend that I made at the hospital a couple of months ago when I first found out that I was sick. She used to go to my high school before her parents had to pull her out because of her condition. She has cystic fibrosis and occupies a room a couple doors down from me.

"Hey, I'm headed to the café, wanna come?" she asks me and I smile at her. We are always joking about how similar we are because we always think the same things, this is just another thing to add on to the list of "Reasons why Lyla and Ally might be secret twins who got separated at birth". I'm not even joking though, we're seriously almost the same person. It's crazy.

"It's like you read my mind. I was just on my way there." I said and she smiled back at me.

"See this is why we're such good friends." Ally states and we walk together to the café.

♢♢♢

Once we got to the café, we both got some of the worlds best pizza and sat down to eat.

"I really haven't talked to you in a while. We need to catch up." Ally says and I look up at her laughing.

"I literally saw you last week."

"Yeah... but a lot could happen in a week," she states. "So what's new in the life of Lyla Eve Baker?"

I laugh again, "Nothing really I guess. Just school and the hospital... Oh that reminds me, I'm volunteering here over the summer and I forgot to grab my papers to turn them in to Talia."

I look at the clock on the wall. 6:19. Volunteer Services closes in 11 minutes. Well shit, I'll just have to turn them in tomorrow morning.

"Well that's good! Don't you need the hours to graduate? And you're here so much anyways..." Ally exclaims.

"Yeah I just think it'll be a fun thing to do since school is ending and I'm going to have to be here more anyways. So what about you? What's new in the life of Ally?"

"Hmm," She makes a weird face as she tries to think. "OH YEAH! So you know how I need new lungs?"

"Uh yeah" I laugh.

"So I finally got on a donors list." She says and I almost scream.

"ALLY THAT'S FUCKING AMAZING!" I exclaim as I get up to go hug her.

"I know right? Now I finally have a chance of getting to annoy you for a bit longer." She giggles as she hugs me back.

"Well we have to celebrate... but we're gonna have to wait a couple of days because right now I'm supposed to be getting tests done. See you tomorrow?" I ask as I grab my trash off the table.

Ally does the same, "Actually... what time do you leave tomorrow? I'm probably going to sleep in since I haven't been able to in the past couple of days."

"Oh, I have to leave at 10 to get to school. I'll be back on Thursday though so enjoy your sleep." I say as we walk towards the exit and throw away our trash. I make sure to grab two things of orange juice before we leave.

"Aw what am I gonna do for two days without you?"

"Enjoy it." I laugh and we walk into the elevator.

When we get to the 4th floor, we walk together past the ICU and into our hall until I reach my room.

"Bye Ally."

"Bye Lyla."

And with that I enter back into my room for a night full of tests.
