I take one step forward again. Now standing before my mother's room, I take a deep, shooting breath and knock on her door.
"Come in." I hear her voice.
I slowly open the door, trying to be as delicate as possible, and walk in. She looks up to me from her laptop. She wears her glasses and her long hair was locked in a bun. She smiles at me and taps the space next to her on the bed.
"Come here, sweetie." She says before looking back down to the computer screen, starting to type words again.
I walk to the bed and make myself comfortable next to her, pulling the covers up. I look at her again but she doesn't look back.
I clear my throat. "Erm- Mom?" I speak, "Can we talk?".
As the words leave my mouth she looks away from whatever she is doing and her attention goes to me. She removes her glasses but doesn't say anything else.
"So, there was a night, I think it was Saturday," I begin, "Well, Mike heard you crying mom and I'm here to-".
"I don't want to talk about it." She quickly says, turning away.
I sit up on the bed. "Mom, please."
She shakes her head.
"Mom, remember when it was just you and me?" I ask, watching her as her head slowly begins to move in my direction, "Do you? After dad left and Mike went to college it was just you and me. Just us two and we used to talk about everything. Mostly I talked about my problems and you listened carefully and gave me advises but there was sometimes that it was the other way around. Do you remember those times, mom?".
She looks down, sighing and nodding.
"Well, nothing has changed. Please, talk to me." I beg, beginning to feel slightly emotional. Just a little bit.
She looks up. "You'll think I'm silly." She says.
"I would never think that! Trust me."
She sighs once more, giving up. "Your father is getting married again." She says.
Her words hit me hard in the chest and I struggle to keep my eyes from widening.
"He- He's what?" I stutter, still completely shocked.
"Yes, darling. He's getting married." She confirms.
I frown in disgust. "With who?" I ask.
She shakes her shoulders. "I don't know. Some girl from his job, I guess."
"Jesus, that was unexpected." I say as a matter of fact, while she looks down upset and I remember the main reason I was here for. To help her. "Mom, I know it's hard to listen to this but we all knew it could happen, right? I bet he still cares so much about you though."
"I'm happy for him, Crystal, I really am but I don't know. When I found out, my mind was completely filled with memories of when we were together. Ever since the first day we've met it's been such an emotional ride for me and I don't know how it got to this point. When it was me and him, I hated him and loved him at the same time. I was constantly stressed though completely and utterly in love. I don't know how it got to this point where we barely ever speak. I just- I just know how it happened," She snifs and let go of a breath, "I don't know what got to me that night. Maybe I was just nostalgic."
I'm speechless. Completely speechless. My mom has never opened up to me this much. Never. Such a delicate subject, I don't even know what to say. I never knew she felt that way. She never told me.
She snifs again and shakes her head. "But it's okay. If I could, I would go through it all again just because of you and Mike." She completes, looking at me.
